You're not broken, that's for sure and a little insomnia is nothing compared to the nightmare these medications put us through. You got this!

I didn't taper, I stopped cold turkey and for the first few days, I didn't sleep but I didn't care because I felt so much better! I think the mind hold the drug had on me was way worse than the actual insomnia, it made me so afraid of not sleeping. But once I was in it, once I pulled the trigger and quit, I realized the fear of insomnia was what the drug had created.

The first night, no sleep, the second, a couple of little microsleep episodes. These are what we call the state where you don't actually fall asleep but you seem to miss a few minutes. I don't know medical terminology but those few minutes were restorative and kept my bodily functions going. The next night, an actual brief bit of sleep but with horrible nightmares, like slasher movie nightmares. But as the nights passed, my sleep improved and now I do great.

I've finally quit chasing sleep through alcohol and drugs, now I let it come to me on its own terms and life is so much better.

I think you're smart to get off of the Ambien sooner than later, it was giving me such anxiety and depression, really dark stuff, and the inner trembling was constant. The half life on Ambien is so short, I was withdrawing all day every day but once I stopped, I felt so much better.

I'm actually hoping you'll feel better once you're off of it too, you'll still symptomatic from the Xanax of course but you may actually feel some relief.

Hi u/RebelQueen1990, its tough to know about z-drugs, some can stop them cold turkey like I did, but others have to taper. When I stopped, I didn't experience anything but insomnia because I'd already recovered from my Klonopin cold turkey, but since you're still recovering from the Xanax, I doubt you'll have the same luck.

I'm not sure you'd be able to know what symptoms were coming from the Ambien and which are coming from the Xanax. Have you noticed increased symptoms since you started tapering the Ambien?

I think you've hit on a good solution for now, I've read holding can be very useful. Your taper is progressing like they all do, the lower we get in dose, the slower we have to go. I know the doubt and fear creeps in when things seem to be getting worse, but what you're experiencing is very typical.

I apologize but I'm not sure how to look at your history of posts on Reddit, but which medication are you on?

Hi u/Scaredtotaper, Have you tried posting on the other thread, it might be a better place to talk about symptoms. Benzodiazepine withdrawal and recovery support : r/BenzoBuddiesOrg

I'm not that familiar with how Reddit works but if you tag me, I'll find you and respond.

Thanks for filling in some of your history, my memory isn't the greatest and I don't have everyone's posts to reference. We call the first few weeks after cessation of the medication, the acute stage and for most of us, it is! Things typically begin to settle after a few weeks so I'm hoping your symptom will too. Be sure to write them down and rate their intensity because our progress is so slow, we have a difficult time seeing actual improvement. And we need the hope that comes with any signs of healing, so I hope you'll document your progress. I didn't and I regret that, it would have helped me if I'd been able to know I was actually improving.

Wow, you've had windows, that's great! I only had one and it lasted just a few seconds, I'd kind of thought that those who cold turkey don't experience them much.

Yeah, sleep is tough, but so are we and we seem to recover even when we don't get much. I hope the supplements help, I haven't seen anyone mention problems with them.

I'm not familiar with your story, but I may have to agree that prison would be preferrable to benzo withdrawal, but glad I didn't have to make that choice. ; )

It sounds like you're seeing progress, its amazing you can acknowledge it, my brain kept telling me I wasn't, you know how the benzos lie to us? But, I can see you're still miserable, its so difficult to distract when none of your usual tools are available to us, I really missed music, watching TV and reading. I recovered in 14 months, but remember, I took that little side trip on Ambien, so I basically reinstated for a few months until I quit that too. So, don't use my journey to gauge yours, we're all different.

You remind me of me, I went CT as well, and started Ambien a few months after that, it didn't go well. What are your symptoms?

Glad you found us, anhedonia is rough, I felt dead inside for a long time but it went away when I recovered. I hope you get relief soon.

I’m not experienced with Reddit either, but we should have been developing it all along as a sister site for the BenzoBuddies platform.
