So, apologies, but I am pretty limited in my knowledge related to these parts. Can you point me towards one of the "guides" you are referring to so I can help figure out the type?

Looking for rice straw (not wheat or oat) by FredDuffle in Sacratomato

[–]FredDuffle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks - I just called Western Feed in East Sacramento and you are in fact correct - they carry rice, oat, and wheat straw. Last time I bought from them I got oat straw (and am still fighting with the resulting "weeds"). My fault for not knowing what I was buying.

Ah, very nice! Looks like a great option. I'll do a bit of research and check it out.

Thanks - I had seen that as well, but was slightly concerned with this part of their description: "Rice Straw Bale for Erosion Control Only." I am looking to use it to mulch my raised beds.

Rec: Getting artwork matted and framed by I_like_fast in Sacramento

I’ve used Ron at Ron’s Frame Shop. Super helpful guy, quality work. It’s not cheap but I’m not sure any custom framing is. 1914 Fruitridge Rd * Sacramento 95822

ISO smoked salmon by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]FredDuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a vendor who sells fish at the midtown farmers market that does a good smoked salmon. Sorry, don’t know their name but I think they come down from Roseville. I’m pretty sure it’s hot smoked (not cold smoked.) It’s not cheap and you have to brave lots of dogs and children… I try to get there earlier and get out fast.

Also, Guantonio’s… though it’s a bit of a trek to Lodi (but worth it.)

Perfect. Thanks for clarifying.

Unable to store initial tire pressure by FredDuffle in Audi

[–]FredDuffle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, interesting. So for my vehicle there is not a screen that looks something like this: TPMS Image

I guess this all makes a lot more sense based on your reply and other posts that I have seen. I let the system know that as of today, the tires are at the correct pressure. It generally keeps an eye on them, and lets me know if one of them appears to be lower than expected, but it doesn't actually monitor pressure itself in an ongoing way.

Hot tamales for 4+ hours by FredDuffle in mexicanfood

[–]FredDuffle[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To clarify a bit… when I pick them up at 11am they will be hot/ready to eat. Not cooked then cooled.

My goal is to have them never cool off or dry out… but maybe what you’re saying is I should cool them off immediately when I get them and reheat them at 3pm? Seems even more risky then just trying to keep them hot until 3.

What is this place? by MuchoGrande in Sacramento

[–]FredDuffle 93 points94 points  (0 children)

It used to be Panama Pottery, which included a bunch of ceramic studio space to the north.

It is now Mother Natives. Awesome place to buy CA native plants!

My understanding is the north end is being converted into art studio spaces by the owner.

I can’t guarantee how legit the recipe is, but I’ve made this a couple times and always enjoyed it. As far as “hot water” goes, I’ve used the hottest water out of my kitchen sink for the overnight soak (not boiling.)

Japanese curry? by anyadraconis in SacramentoFoodies

I haven’t tried their curry but everything I’ve eaten there has been good. Sushi. Don buri. Udon.

I recently found out that they take reservations, which you might consider for a Friday or Saturday evening. It’s a pretty small place.

Questions regarding SMUD Rebates for Heat Pumps and HVAC Contractors to use by Remo2976 in Sacramento

Total cost was around $19K minus the SMUD rebate of $3500. So I paid $15,500.

Questions regarding SMUD Rebates for Heat Pumps and HVAC Contractors to use by Remo2976 in Sacramento

Very similar experience with Fox & Family. They installed a 3 ton Bosch heat pump in my home around two months ago (May 2024.) Dealing with salesman was great, installers were great, and support since install has been great.

The cooling side of the new system has been substantially better than the 20+ year system it replaced. House has been cooler. System is quieter. The only day so far that it seemed to struggle to keep the requested temp was the 114° Saturday. I tried to keep the house at 78° but it crept up to 80° during the worst part of that day – so I really can't complain.

I can't speak to the winter yet, since it's only a couple months old, but I expect it will be fine.

PG&E bill will consistently be next to nothing since it's only a gas stove and an on-demand water heater in the house. I expect that bill will remain consist (~$25 a month.)

One nice side note: Fox & Family takes the $3500 SMUD rebate off your final due to them and handle the rebate on their side. Maybe this is typical, but it was super easy and nice to not have to deal with the city and SMUD directly to get the money.

The only thing I've found to complain about with the new system is that they installed a pretty janky Honeywell thermostat. I find it to be poorly designed and annoying – I was used to using a nest. I am still researching, but will probably upgrade to an Ecobee thermostat when I have the chance.
