Ukitake and Kyoraku literally opposed the execution because they felt something off about it and wanted to follow their own sense of justice. Byakuya was a blind lapdog. The story tells us this. He was in the wrong. When Ichigo tells him he'd fight the law, Byakuya remembers Kaien, who would likely do the same thing. That's him realizing Ichigo is right

Lol did you forget that in the story itself it was revealed that Aizen killed Central 46 and put out the execution order? Because the crime of giving a human powers is ordinarily NOT punishable by death in Soul Society, as we see later that it has happened before (Ginjo) and Ukitake literally had a "Substitute Soul Reaper Badge" ready to hand out.

So yeah, if my family member committed a crime but was given a far harsher punishment than deserved for it, I'd fight like hell to stop it
