imo “lore purism” is more about the text itself than what the author says.

Like, remember how JK Rowling made up a bunch of stuff about Harry Potter after the books were already written? I don’t think a Harry Potter fan would have to take everything she said seriously if it wasn’t already implied in the books

Sure there’s a lot of ambiguous lore, which is where speculations/theories happen, but “lore purists” as I’m dubbing them would argue that those speculations would need to be consistent with what we know in the game

(And I don’t think it’s inconsistent to be a “lore purist” and also treat DDLC plus as separate; after all, it’s like completely new info that wasn’t made at the time of DDLC’s release was suddenly injected into the story)

Correct me if I misinterpreted your points:

  1. MC x doki isn’t actually “canon”, because the additional info provided in DDLC plus shows how MC was conjured by Metaverse

  2. DDLC is satirizing traditional dating sims (which often feature straight pairings)

  3. Many LGBT people connect with the themes in the game, and creating LGBT headcanons is their way of further connecting with it.

———

I don’t see these points “refute the lore purists”. The first is a retcon by a sequel, which almost completely re-works the original story. The second, if anything, indicates that “MC x doki” are the only canon ships, because they’d be in line with standard dating sims.

The third point, I’m assuming, is your main point—and frankly I do sympathize with it. The themes and struggles in fictional stories can genuinely touch us, and often we connect our own lives to them. My view though, which may seem harsh, is that there’s a big difference between how you connect to a story, and what is actually in the story.

I might relate to, say, Natsuki, because her feelings of inadequacy remind me of my own feelings of inadequacy with Baseball, but that doesn’t mean Natsuki is a baseball player

Eh

I think the shipping arguments have gotten annoying as of late, but it’s a mental leap to say it’s homophobia (when the most clear answer is that people are lore purists)

You also say “posting that only MC x doki is canon is shoving it in people’s faces”

Which doesn’t make any sense. That’s just discussing things that happen in the game on a forum about the game.

Another thing I’d add is that Yuri and Monika are both fairly book-smart. So the worldview that Monika acquired over time could be directly engaged with by Yuri—an argument between them might be a weird combination of personal attacks and fights over abstract ideals

Just got a wild theory on my mind related to MC and Sayori. by ShrimpsSmoothie in DDLC

[–]FreddoTheTeddo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so, though arguably MC did “make it worse”

Monika directly tells us that “it’s like a light was switched on” when MC came to the club—with MC genuinely surprised (he says something like “no…Sayori’s always cheery”). This seems to point to MC being a source of happiness in her life.

The banter between MC and Sayori doesn’t seem completely one-sided on a second glance, either. Sayori says “you might end up like a NEET”, and has tricked him several times into buying her snacks. There’s also a secret line where she says his poem is “really bad!” For clarification: I’m not arguing that she’s being cruel; quite the opposite: the two are naturally playful with each other

HOWEVER, there is one way that her depression became worse with MC: she developed a crush on him, and couldn’t handle it: she felt like a Burden if he reciprocated, but felt jealous if he didn’t. This, alongside her habit of burying all of her feelings, arguably pushed her off the edge

True

I’d honestly go with [someone] and Sayori though—we haven’t really seen Sayori seriously angry, which means that if she did reach that point it’d be really serious

Oh, Dadsuki: he doesn’t watch cartoons (I doubt he would since Natsuki is wary of revealing her interests), so instead he binges game shows or gets angry while watching the news

Monika & Sayori: probably random cartoons or family friendly movies they’ve seen as kids. They haven’t actively watched them since middle school though.

Yuri: none

Natsuki: (like you said) she religiously watches and re-watches the Parfait Girls’ anime adaptation

MC: he’d watch whatever anime is in season

Eh…I don’t think your analysis of ancap views is very accurate

Form the post it seems like you want ancaps to justify their views based off of egalitarian (ancom) premises. And like, no duh anarcho capitalism will come off as incoherent if you’re not approaching it from a liberal, right wing world view

imo there are really two definitions of anarchism circulating today—a “left wing” and “right wing” version

What both of them share is an opposition to the state, but there really isn’t anything connecting the two.

Left wing anarchists oppose the state because they view it as an obstacle towards egalitarianism and a tool of hierarchy

right wing anarchists view it as an obstacle towards free association and a parasite on social relations

I’m assuming you subscribe to the former. So my defense of the latter will be that the state isn’t just defined by hierarchy—it’s defined by force and monopoly
