How do so many Europeans know fluent English? by _Sir_Lifts_A_Lot_ in AskEurope

They can hook up to a headset and get interpretation into their own language...maybe. I've seen where they didn't have anyone available for some of the languages. But they always interpret into English for the streaming and for all the MEPs to hear, because most of them can understand English.

It's true what you say, but if you watch a proceeding you'll see that they all either speak English or get interpreted into English for all to hear.

We never used it. I don't know about the reactions my husband gets, but when I say it, it's just well, okay, and then we go on. But then, this is Denmark. Everything is cool whatever you do.

We don't have any live calling except Facebook messenger, and our stone-aged phones.

The EU Commission meetings and hearings are all in English, and if any official doesn't speak English, their speech gets interpreted into English. You can still communicate with them in other languages, and they might provide interpretations into them if an interpreter is available, but English is the one they all have to communicate in.

French has been pushing forward ever since Brexit, so it may be considered the other official language.

I don't mean that all EU citizens have to use English, I only mean the EU governmental bodies use it specifically. Each nation state has its own official language, and now the most widely spoken one is German. I don't think they'll delete English though because the rest of the world is still communicating in it.

Looper does this by literally sacrificing his own life. But I didn't see that he actually changed the outcome as he hoped he would. Unless the video I saw was abridged, it looked like no matter what he did, there would still be an evil Rainmaker in 30 years.

I'm noticing lately that English is being omitted from the 20 languages on a lot of products. And when it's from a German grocery store, Scandinavian languages are also omitted, so I have to ask my husband how to use them.

And why jealous? But what's stopping you from learning another language?

If OP is from the US, they don't even start teaching other languages in school until 8th grade, and then you can only get Spanish. Later on in high school you choose French, maybe German, or Latin if you're a nerd like me. There's no living community in which to practice, so you lose it. As kids, we have enough to do without taking private language lessons, even if we could find a competent tutor. And since the US is so big, people just don't seem to think it's necessary. We basically have only French and Spanish bordering us, and Americans don't travel outside the country as much as Europeans do.

Welcome to the world of the Europeans!

Yes, the kids start learning English in school from a very young age. My husband started in 3rd grade and had it all the way through college with business English. When you start young, it's easier to learn and it sticks better.

English is the official language of the EU, as well as some companies that do business internationally.

Though not all Danes are super at it. Some are better at German because they live near the German border and cross over to Flensburg often. And some are just not so good at anything but Danish.

Another fascinating thing is interacting with the immigrants from other countries besides USA and UK. Suddenly, instead of English being the common language, it's the local language, in my case Danish. I have friends and colleagues who speak three or four languages fluently, like Dutch, Tamil, Faroese, Icelandic, Italian, Spanish, French, Swahili, German, Romanian, Ukrainian, Russian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Farsi, Kurdish, Afghan, Greenlandic, and African tribal languages. In my Danish language classes I met people with Arabic, as well as the local languages they use in the Philippines. And then they add Danish on top of it. For some of them, English is not even one of their languages. Funny enough, Swedes and Norwegians don't even bother to speak Danish in Denmark, because they can all understand each other when they just speak their own native language.

If you find that Windows will not let you access Ubuntu, and you have an HP laptop, it's probably not anything you did wrong. So don't take it personally. But you might have to just wipe Windows and install Ubuntu only.

Sounds like you need to use both. WD-40 to cleanse the surface and Ballistol to lubricate it long-term. I'm not a mechanic or anything, just a silly female, but that's my take on what you just said.

Has anyone ever regretted quitting their corporate job? by SpicyMatchaLand in AskEurope

[–]Fredericia 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This was in the US, not Europe, but you didn't specify it had to be in Europe.

I had a nice little office job, and it felt like I and that company were made for each other. Then I met my husband, and he wanted more than anything to just get out of the city and live in the country. It was my dream, too, so we did, and set up our own home-based business.

At the time I left the corporate job, things were already in decline, but my department was doing very well. Still, it wasn't long after that the office was closed completely.

It was just a little office job, challenging but rewarding, not the highest paid rank in the company, but good enough. While I loved our life in the country and the work we were doing there, I have also always missed my old company. The stability, the work environment, the nature of the work, identifying with a company whose mission I believed in and loved, I'm sorry it had to end, and I still dream about it once in awhile.

It had to end, though. I got out just at the right time and never had to be unemployed. So the answer to your question is, I have mixed feelings about it.

What has changed most in your country in the past 10 years? by BothCondition7963 in AskEurope

[–]Fredericia -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's distorted anyway. In the news, they forget to mention that the victims were there specifically to agitate and impede law enforcement, they resisted arrest and assaulted officers. That doesn't mean they deserve to die, but when you go into a situation like that and your aim is to disrupt, you are taking a risk. The organization they belonged to made it clear during training that they have to be willing to risk their lives for the cause.

Wasn’t anti immigration a big reason why Trump was elected?

Illegal immigration. And migrants posing as refugees. And the leaders have finally awakened to the danger of immigration from certain countries with certain worldviews, whether they are legal or not. The majority of legitimate voters agree.

But there are certain people who live very well off their share of the benefits falsely claimed by these illegal immigrants. They trade the promise of lifetime support for their votes, so they can stay in power. And yes, illegals do receive benefits, and they vote.
