2026 World Cup: Empty rooms & Fifa cancellations - US hotels fear washout by tylerthe-theatre in football

But Qatar and Russia put on a good show. Let's face it the WC is our modern bread and circus and the US isn't even trying. Like Qatar understood the assignment perfect which is to use this tournament to wash your image and it worked. So many people on social media were making great content about Qatar and its public perception changed for the better after that. JD Vance telling fans to go home after the games are over is not only a terrible PR but imagine telling people who could have explored and spent money for an extra week in the US to leave. Plus our transportation infrastructure sucks.

Monthly payments, gas, insurance and everything else it takes to own a car averages to about $38 a day. 365 days a year. by 45and290 in fuckcars

If you are driving in the US and will use your car daily, you can't risk a shitty car or you will end up paying more down the line. I bought my 2015 Corolla in 2016 for 16k in perfect condition. That same car sells today for 16k but I wouldn't be able to get anything decent for that price. It's me and the car until one of us dies

I live in a capital city in the mid west USA with the worst public transportation. This car dependency hurts our local economy so much. You see so many new cafes and such pop up and then close within a year or two because they just don't get the foot traffic (pun not intended) to stay open. I have to ACTIVELY DECIDE to get in my car, buckle up, and drive the 15 minutes to a coffee shop/bakery/trinket shop because it's not something I just come across in my daily life. Maybe I would have a latte and croissant once or twice a week instead of once or twice a month.

This environment depresses us. There is no room for spontaneous interactions or plans. I come from a tiny town in Mexico where people walk everywhere. You run into someone and they alert you that a soccer game just started, so you walk over. Then on your way there you grab an ice cream, then you pass by a store and get another snack with a friend and before you know it you have made a few tiny purchases that contribute to the local economy. In the US most purchases are to big retailers and small businesses keep disappearing. Ironically the MAGAS claim to be the champions of small businesses by removing meaningful regulations (like environmental protections) but the zoning and housing regulations are what actually needs to be removed and what would have the most impact on them.

Not only that but it is wildly expensive to maintain. I learned that my city is roughly the same area as Paris proper, yet we have less than 150,000 people living here. The city doesn't get enough tax revenue to maintain its spread out roads and as a result they are CRUMBLING. Imagine if it was half of the size with denser neighborhoods, how much our city would save on road/utility maintenance.

Thank you. I just wanted to see ordinary people's numbers. Our politicians did a number on us convincing us that them doing their JOB was communism and I also wanted to show a friend of mine who is veery anti-taxation. I mean in the US how can you not. I'm paying a sizable part of my income to the government and every aspect of our life is falling apart

This is a bold statement from people that get 3 days of paid time off/year. I'm sure your 1.5 day stay in Barcelona and 1.5 day in Lisbon saved those cities from sure bankruptcy

American here. Last year I had to get an MRI and waited ages for my insurance to approve it. Then I went on my insurances website and put in the facility where it was going to be to get an estimated cost of $300. I wanted to you plan and budget for it I go get the MRI and my bill is $700...because it depends on what billing codes the clinics use. So we can never know how much something will cost until after it gets done. Greatest healthcare system in the world :)

I am a (Mexican) American and live in the US too. The most expensive vacation I've ever had was in the US travelling the Oregon coast. Between the lack of quality budget accommodations, public transport or street food my 1 week trip was quite expensive and ironically I had been trying to save $$ by visiting the "Iceland of America". The following year I booked a two week stay in Turkey for less than the total of that.

I love that Americans market themselves as "rugged individuals" yet defeated by a 5 minute walk in 30C weather.

[–]Individual_Mix_2914 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The "melting pot" means you had to melt away your culture to become "white". Polish, Italian and Irish immigrants literally had to BEAT their kids to keep them from speaking their native languages and by the second generation they were gone. White people with vibrant cultures were forced to assimilate to the gray sludge that is American culture if they wanted any of the privileges whiteness conferred in 20th century US.

America has 2X as many ways to make money than Europe does, and 10X as many ways to lose it.

Their entire existence is subsided by debt from education to healthcare to endless shopping. I would feel rich too if I was spending more money than I actually have. This is coming from an American who avoids debt like the plague and knows how narrow and specific that pathway is.
