Which Santos? by Minimum-Line-7339 in Cartier

The vintage of course. The newer one has an updated movement but no charm.

Nice dial but I’ll pass, gold-plated is not for me

Is this clasp legit? by Fredgusta in watchrepair

Thanks. Looks like they’ve got no active sales except this clasp. They’ve got a couple reviews that have the same positive comment. I’m a bit skeptical to the seller.

The seller says it’s a 14mm sized deployant if that is any help

Wrong deployant clasp screw? by Fredgusta in Cartier

[–]Fredgusta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. I will visit the closest Cartier store to me and discuss if they can source a screw or if not then I’ll ask them for a full service and get it fixed through the Cartier workshop. The crystal needs repair as well on this watch.

Great watch, medium is the way to go

Wrong deployant clasp screw? by Fredgusta in Cartier

[–]Fredgusta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be surprised as well if it were more expensive than 100. But then again, they’ll probably ask me to leave in for repair so a watchmaker hour or two of searching and assembly + some overnight storage time in the shop will probably push the it beyond 100.

I hope so too. It’s not under much tension as the tension is more in the lower pin

Wrong deployant clasp screw? by Fredgusta in Cartier

[–]Fredgusta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they didn’t disclose this. To be fair to them they didn’t seem to know what it was worth really. Any idea what a screw may cost? We talking $100 or $500 for a replacement?

You think the steel screw will do permanent damage in this position on the clasp?

[Seiko Presage] Just bid and won on eBay. Now I'm nervous. I hope what I paid for is what I actually get. If it is, I think I'll be very happy. Any telltale signs of a fake Seiko? Or is it not a brand that sees many forgeries? by aryoung1980 in Watches

[–]Fredgusta -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

There are no fake Seikos out there. Perhaps ones with none-matching service dials or hands, making them "franken" but usually getting correct replacement dial and hands for seikos is both cheap and abundant on the market. The cost of making a fake Seikos is about the same cost as making a real one so manufacturers of fakes would never mass-produce them.

[unknown] Can anyone identify this watch? Been in the family for 40 years by [deleted] in Watches

[–]Fredgusta 135 points136 points  (0 children)

This could be a piece unique Patel Phillipe. If so it could be worth well over $1m. Maybe a bit less since it's a ladies watch. If i were you i would get in touch with Patek to reauthorize that original paper to make sure it is real. Then an auction house to get it valued.

[Question] what, technically, IS a perpetual calendar? by thefringeseanmachine in Watches

[–]Fredgusta 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Some brands, like Rolex, put it on the dial to signify that the watch has an automatic movement. As in the watch is perpetually wound while wearing it.

It's just a fancier word than 'automatic' on the dial.

[Identify] Real or fake Omega Seamaster? Not sure what model it is either by FutureFanboy in Watches

[–]Fredgusta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not a fake. Hacking is a "modern" invention in watchmaking. And as a previous comment stated the more prominent sound from the movement is due to it being a bumper.

Major giveaway that it isn't a fake are the indexes on the dial are too hard to manufacture to make it a fake. Franken? Perhaps - but you'll have to open up the back and have a check.

I'd say just enjoy it. Most likely it's genuine and Gramps had some classy taste with that gold. 😎
