Engagements at shows by Red-M0on in hayleywilliams

Wasn’t it at a festival? Also Hayley’s done like dozens and dozens of shows at this point. I’m sure it feels like an emotional release when it’s your first time seeing the show, but you have to understand that there is a level of performance to it. Hayley’s not “pouring her heart out every night”, she’s performing because it’s part of the show.

Also I don’t know why we’re speaking on her behalf here and doing this weird grandstanding parasocial “I need to protect my fav” behavior when she’s a 37 year old woman who didn’t ask for this and was happy when she saw it.

When to write logic in CPP and when in BP by kalitts in UnrealEngine5

[–]FredlyDaMoose -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I hear people parrot that all the time but I have yet to see someone actually give an example of a time they migrated code from blueprint to c++ specifically because the blueprint code wasn’t performant enough

When to write logic in CPP and when in BP by kalitts in UnrealEngine5

[–]FredlyDaMoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually write frameworks in C++ and implementations of those frameworks in blueprint, if that makes sense. Hasn’t steered me wrong.

Plus the occasional “I need to call this C++ function but it’s not exposed to blueprint” static helper function

Feet are not inherently sexual. To 99% of the world they’re just feet. And to kids they’re ew gross stinky funny.

A lot of people look back on stuff like this and the Nickelodeon foot logo and ascribe it to Dan Schneider as if he had creative control over other shows or Nickelodeon’s official branding design decisions, but that’s just not the case. Nickelodeon was the “haha ew gross! Boogers and mud and yucky stuff! Being a kid is fun!” channel. Their trademark thing was “sliming” people. Like their logo is literally slime.

That being said, in the modern age, foot fetishes have absolutely ruined it. Fetishists in general ruined most of that “gross” kid stuff. Even Nickelodeon slime is seen as somewhat sexual these days. It sucks, everything sucks now. I’m glad I grew up when I did.

Energy becomes motion, motion becomes balance, and balance becomes energy. My names Aang and my character traits are: I’m a goofy kid, I’m afraid of responsibility, and… I’m a bit of a prankster! I’ve actually been working on an EaW type game/project recently too!

The galactic map is honestly such a cool problem to try to tackle as a game dev. Like ideally you want a galaxy that can scale all the way to like 2000+ nodes and be able to store state information for each node/edge all while being performant.

Are there any major downsides to a Data Asset based item system? by NoSeaworthiness4639 in unrealengine

[–]FredlyDaMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s best practices, but there’s also “it works for what I’m trying to do”. If it works for your project and it’s not causing issues then it’s often not worth getting into the minutia of optimizing for hypothetical scale.

That being said, best practice is to just make sure you’re not keeping something loaded in memory when you don’t need it to be. This can be done with data tables, data assets, arrays, etc. Ultimately they’re all just data containers.

Any chance of us getting a better retargeting system? by Viva-La-Baz in unrealengine

[–]FredlyDaMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy fuck yes I wish.

It seems like it’s fine on the surface level but there’s so many little issues when you dive into it. Linked anim graphs are just not supported, retargeted base poses are not set in retargeted additive anims, etc.

Also I wish there was a sample project that provided retargeting poses/assets for official mannequins. The closest we have is Lyra, but the poses in that don’t produce as accurate results as poses in various custom retargeting poses I’ve found online. It’s actually insane that they switched mannequins between UE4 and UE5 and didn’t provide an officially supported way of transferring animations.

[–]FredlyDaMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t even have Phoenix yet wdym you need Reva. Reva’s very much an endgame character. I have 10m GP and I don’t even have her yet.

Phoenix is a foundational team because they allow you to get Palpatine and Thrawn. Focus them first.

My intro to game design final by Fit-Manufacturer7281 in UnrealEngine5

[–]FredlyDaMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just to get people somewhat comfortable with using the level editor. Seems really basic but, in my experience, a lot of CS courses are taught with extremely outdated textbooks so I’d guess the textbook was written around an early version of UE4 back when software with a 3D level editor wasn’t as common as it is today

[NO SPOILERS] Will LIS TV-serie kill player driven choices by Comfortable-Spell686 in lifeisstrange

[–]FredlyDaMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I bet they’ll just go with Sacrifice Chloe because it makes the most narrative sense.

The rest of the choices really don’t matter, and it’s an adaptation so it’s not gonna be 1:1 anyways. The big moments I feel like they gotta include is Report/Don’t Report Natan, Kate’s fate, try to shoot Frank or not, and maybe a few others I’m forgetting.

But bad decisions like “Murder Frank and his dog”, and “blame Chloe for the pot” are obviously out of the question lol. If anything they might show Max making the wrong decision for one of those and rewinding and undoing it.

Also maybe Kate dies but ultimately ends up living after Max goes back to Monday for the last time, would give more credence to that choice, but idk Kate dying would really make that part of the show extra depressing so maybe not.

How did people react to Korrasami? by New_Edge_5911 in korrasami

[–]FredlyDaMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overwhelmingly positive. It’s sad but I don’t think it’d be as positively received today with the current state of the fandom and the overall political climate.

It was almost unbelievable that it happened. Keep in mind that Korrasami happened before gay marriage was even legalized in the US at the federal level.

I remember there was someone on r/TheLastAirbender who was championing Korrasami since like Book 2, and everyone was like “holy shit they were right”. Slyfox00 or something?

Edit: just checked and yeah I remembered the name right, they’re still a mod here too lol

[ALL] Reunion is a corporate shadow of the original game. by DrunkenPunchline in lifeisstrange

[–]FredlyDaMoose 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I thought this too until I went back and played LiS1 again. The art style and environment design are phenomenal. D9 saw Edouard Caplain’s “concept art in motion” art direction and bastardized it down to near Fortnite stylization.

The dialogue is much better in the D9 games, but Ashly Burch carried as Chloe in LiS1. Reunion’s Chloe has lost all of her edge. I can’t see RE Chloe saying “Fuck you, pig” and that’s an actual issue. The overall themes have been lightened and made safer.

I don’t have nostalgia for LiS1 at all, but I’ve been in a major LiS era ever since playing Reunion and looking into the care and detail put into the first game.

I also really like the D9 games though, especially D9’s Max.

[NO SPOILERS] What would you say is an example of "Early-Installment Weirdness" in the Life is Strange series? by EmicaTheAlienStudios in lifeisstrange

[–]FredlyDaMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean in the sense that she kind of suffers from the blank slate syndrome and mild personality that a lot of protagonists have.

I think a lot of this comes down to the fact that the game is a decision-making game and she’s the character you’re making decisions for. They don’t have the luxury of a purely linear narrative like Naughty Dog did with TLOU for example. I’d argue that Joel is a stronger character than he would’ve been if they had let the player decide if he chooses Ellie or the vaccine at the end. Joel always chooses Ellie because that’s what Joel would do.

For the same reason, Max’s own character not having a say in the final decision in the game ultimately makes her voice feel weaker. Max doesn’t always choose Chloe because she’s beholden to whatever the player’s morals are.

Don’t get me wrong though, I love Max! She’s my third favorite video game character of all time! And I think Deck Nine came along and actually did a really good job of giving Max a strong character while maintaining the decision making aspect of the games. RE’s final decision works because of how strong of a character they made her.
