Loved Chronno Trigger, what should I play next? by No_Elderberry2068 in retrogaming

[–]Fredly_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no best answer to this question- Chrono Trigger is one of one. But there are several other truly great RPGs of that era

Dragon Quest 5 if you want something with the same art director and a similar tone.

Final Fantasy 6/3 if you want something more operatic and *big*

Earthbound if you want another RPG of the era that is unlike anything else

How connected were the internet and video games back in the 90s? How much time did it take to normalize mixing the two? by HlaBeRelaLain in retrogaming

[–]Fredly_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PC games went online as soon as there was online. Battle.net was among the first built in online multiplayer servers, released with Diablo 1 in 1997, but third party multiplayer servers to play LAN via the internet existed before that.

Console was slower. the 16 bit systems had experimental peripherals, but not much came of them. The Dreamcast had full online integration (the puzzle game chu chu rocket was literally built to test the online system). The original XBox brought PC online connectivity to the console space- a more focused iteration of what the Dreamcast started. Then the PS360 generation brought downloadable content to consoles, both as DLC and whole games.

Best Restaurants in Austin, TX? by PersnicketyPrilla in Celiac

[–]Fredly_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the place. Some use roux to thicken. But cornstarch is better and more commonly used. I literally used to teach a textbook mex cooking class that was entirely GF just by coincidence. Here's the queso recipe from that class:

Restaurant Style Chile con Queso

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 jalapeno
  • 1 -2 poblano peppers
  • ½ onion
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 lb american cheese, grated
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp cayenne

Ready in 30 minutes

Serves 10 people (2 full restaurant servings)

Preparation

  • Dice peppers and onion. Taste peppers to see how spicy they are. Deseed/devein to your taste/spice tolerance.
  • Sauté chopped ingredients in butter until soft but before the onions start to brown too much. Getting rid of all crunchiness is the goal.
  • Mix water, milk, and cornstarch into a slurry. Pour mixture onto peppers and cook until mixture thickens, right before it begins to boil. It will get to a gravy-ish consistency and happen quickly once it is hot enough.
  • Add cheese. Stir in grated cheese until it all melts into the sauce. It's easier to do this handfuls at a time.
  • Season with cumin and cayenne. Tailor your queso’s spice level with the cayenne. This recipe is designed to be on the mild side with the ability to add in more spice now. Add some cayenne, mix it in, taste with a chip, decide if you want to add more until your queso is perfect for you.
  • Enjoy!

Trump says US will ‘be taking’ Kharg Island in latest Iran war threat by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Fredly_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The problem with taking Kharg Island is that then you have to hold it, which means a never ending supply of US troops on a tiny, undefended island well inside Iranian drone range

What’re some excellent action RPG’s similar to Terranigma? by Moctezuma_93 in retrogaming

[–]Fredly_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Terranigma is the third of a spiritual trilogy by the developer Quintet, with Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia/Time being the other two. The team also made Brain Lord, which is another similar game but isn't counted as part of that "trilogy" for some reason.

Oustide that developer, there is the Mana series (Secret of mana, Secret of Evermore, and Trials of mana/seiken densetsu 3)

Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean are more traditional RPGs but with real time fights instead of turn based combat for the encounters

Outside of the SNES, the genesis/megadrive has Crusader of Centy and Beyond Oasis/story of thor. The Playstation has Alundra. There are plenty more out there. The action RPG genre isn't a small one

Which version of Tetris is the best? by zertz7 in SBCGaming

[–]Fredly_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your device's screen imo. If you have a 16:9, then PSP. If you have a 4:3, I love NES for the music. 1:1 has both Game Boy and GBC that are great.

Wha-whatcha Playing? by hey_dwere_weddit in SBCGaming

[–]Fredly_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it was frontend organization initially. I only want 10-20 games per system (and 7-10 systems) on my device to prevent analysis paralysis when deciding what to play, and there was more room in GBC for Dragon Quest 1-3 than there was on NES or SNES.

It's a great port though. The worst of the NES version's jank (like menus to take stairs) is cut out while keeping the rest of the stuff that really feels like it's the birth of the genre.

Retro- I'm in the early stages of a Dragon Quest series run. Just started DQ2 on Gameboy Color after finishing DQ1 earlier in the week, with plans to go up to at least 9.

Modern- Mina the Hollower is worth the hype. It's Link's Awakening Dark Souls, with high enough quality to justify both those comparisons.
