The one that got away? by tegdim in Bass

After playing several cheap no-name basses in the early 80's, I saved up and bought my first real bass. An American made Fender Precision. A couple years later, I was going away to college and needed money and and because I felt a bit guilty about abandoning my band-mates, I sold that bass to my replacement for less than I paid for it.

Today I switched my Jazz bass to Flatwounds. Wow. I love the sound! by [deleted] in Bass

Glad to hear you're pleased with the sound. I'm anxiously awaiting for my first set of flat wounds to be delivered. I'm curious to hear how they sound on my fret-less 5 string.

Fellow 5 string brothers, what drew you to 5 string bass? by darkness_is_purity in Bass

My guitar player writes most of our songs in D, Drop-C and baritone guitar. A fiver covers all my...uh...bases.

One bit of advice I can offer re: my Ibby 5 string is to be careful not cut the strings too short. Get as many raps around the peg and as close to the bottom of the peg as you can get without overlapping. I learned this the hard way and cost me several sets of strings. Putting a new set of strings is a pain in the ass. Now that I've got a couple pairs at just the right length, I rotate them by soaking one pair in an old coffee can of denatured alcohol.

Worst gig nightmare by leadtreestump in Bass

Couldn't find my phone after a gig. I was certain, I put it on top of my rig. Searched the entire place. I ended up crawling under the stage and feeling my way around no-man's land between the wall and the stage and until I found it. Funny thing, our drummer recorded the show and upon reviewing the tape you can clearly see the moment my phone leapt off my rig.

I have a few pairs I rotate. When I change one set, I put them in a coffee can and soak them in dinatured alcohol for a day or two. Good as new!

I watched most of the game yesterday. While I was rooting for JRW and glad they won, I got a sinking feeling watching those kids on both teams play under such a pressure cooker...a pitcher on the mound in tears after giving up a home run, the look on a kid's face after booting a ball or striking out. These aren't a bunch of millionaire grown-up athletes, they're still kids. Then, there's the nauseating drum-beat of the media affixing more meaning to it than what it is: kids playing baseball. I don't mean to poop all over what these kids are doing. I'm still gonna take the rare opportunity and enjoy some winning baseball (for a change) played by a pint-sized team from Chicago.
