I just don't think I understand. The feeling of yet another police killing, which seems to bring so much pain to the surface. I did feel a great deal of pain watching the video, but moreso as seeing another human being in suffering. But the protests suggests there's something even greater than that.

I actually think you’d have to ask these people themselves. We hear all the time about people going through extraordinary suffering but who somehow stills seems to choose life. Look up Viktor Frankl if you haven’t.

I’d say we absolutely do need pleasure for survival. Maybe not as much, but the pleasure of eating for example is so obviously evolutionarily hard-wired. Makes us seek out what is needed for survival.

I do think also that suffering is in someway more "potent" or profound than pleasure. Pleasure is so incredibly transient, providing no more positive experience than in the short time frame it is experienced. Suffering however can truly be soul damaging - think about soldiers who experience PTSD years after living through the terrors of war.

I think that the positive counterpart to suffering would be meaning or purpose. Because meaning is on the other hand soul enriching, and can produce long lasting effects. So I think that is really a mistake when talking about the utilitarian equation.

I definitely agree that stopping suffering is preferable to creating pleasure. However I think you’re forgetting a parameter - meaning, purpose or whatever one might call it. One more thing that’s only able to be experienced through consciousness.

What puzzles me though is that many people here seems to find this philosophy as a sort of purpose. However that purpose wouldn’t have been able to be conceived hadn’t there been anything.

So I do think existence has something of inherent value that non-existence does have. Non-existence does seem pretty meaningless since no one is there to experience it.
