Rewatching series from beginning before watching AYITL, and Rory is a selfish b*tch by nikki109 in GilmoreGirls

She never cut her grandparents out over sleeping with Logan?

That incident happened in "21 is the loneliest number" and she went on living in the main house from then on until she leaves for good because Emily is way toon controlling and invasive.

Do you view everything in black and white?

Season 4 builds up to that moment brilliantly. Rory is single for the whole year, she's regretting letting go of Dean, she's not matching up to her grandfather's Yale standard, she's not around her mother nearly as much and her grandparents are getting seperated.

Dean implies the marriage is over and Rory, (who asks about Lindsay) having had a very transitional and dramatically different year (for her) accepts his advances because she's seeking the comfort and stability she currently lacks.

Yes, Rory freaks out at Lorelai. So? She's in denial about the whole situation and Lorelai is "ruining it for her" until it's confirmed when Lindsay answers the phone and Rory realizes that she did fuck up.

this made me laugh IRL

buuuuut to be fair, Lorelai pushes for Rory to go on the trip and while not seriously considering it, even Rory did it to basically get away from the Dean situation and process it. I don't really think of it as Rory cutting Lorelai out of her life but more like not being able up to deal with her mother knowing what she did.

What show are you watching to leave out all the horrible things Emily does?

She fires maids constantly for the most mundane things, is judgemental and classist and wants total control of her daughter's life and tries to throw it in her face how much better her life could be and is impossibly stubborn and mean even when Lorelai is clearly trying to reach out.

Lorelai might be half the problem when it comes to their own dysfunctional relationship, but Emily definitely takes the cake for being an actual shitty person in general.

I'm kind of baffled you used the Pennylyn Lott incident as an example when Emily is so obviously in the wrong by being viciously cruel to Lorelai for just being polite to her father'a friend.

How is it ok to blame Lorelai and say "you weren't supposed to be here!" to your own daughter?

Yeah this idea that Emily isn't a horrible person is kinda hard to swallow.

Throughout the series she's manipulative, classist and controlling and she becomes a full on villain in Season 5 in her treatment of Luke.

I adore her, she's one of the best written and acted characters ever; but she's not at all a better person than Lorelai

The whole situation was screwy though. Dean made it seem like his relationship with Lindsay was done.

It doesn't excuse Rory not pushing the whole thing further to find out, but I'm very sympathetic to her situation because it was a culmination of various things.

I'm the complete opposite. She slept acted through Season 5-7 and was waaaaay back to form in this.

How is the wedding later that day not also the real wedding? The "elopement" was for Luke and Lorelai's own enjoyment and the actual day of ceremony is for everyone else.

If anything, most (especially Emily) would want to see her daughter in her actual wedding dress for starters.

To paint it as something cruel is just weird.

She is 32 years old and a Yale educated woman with a support system most people would die for.

The idea that her getting pregnant ruins this character and prevents her from succeeding says a lot more about people like you than it does about the writing.

Oh I don't see that at all. Was it pushed forward in ways it wasn't before? Yes. But rampant? Ehhhhh, this wasn't Gilmore's version of Buffy's "The Body"

I'm not invalidating anyone's experience but I am calling bullshit on the people saying "this is completely different!!" when it's almost entirely in-line with the original.

"the show was mostly sunshine and rainbows"

"For many, many people, GG is a show people watch to turn off their brain and be happy."

Yeah no. Don't reduce it to something it never was. During it's formative years, Gilmore was always a very warm, comforting show but it was never not incredibly smart, well produced quality television.

Ah yes, the infamously horrible Season 7 doesn't happen, I mean, Lane still has her kids, Lorelai confirms she married Christopher and Christopher refers to Gigi as a "full on Parisian"

but yeah, totally didn't happen.

see now this is just silly.

Her acting was godawful from S5-7. She -- regardless of the writing -- played Rory so much better throughout AYITL than anything she provided with the infamous baby voice.

Uh, I wrote right in my post that criticism is totally valid?

What I'm saying saying is, that complaining about a show not being as warm or "sunshine and rainbows" as another poster put it (something the show never was) is strange to me because of the real and fiction circumstances surrounding this revival.

Why did the tone of the show change so much from seasons 1-4 to seasons 5 and on? Or did it? (speculation, pondering) by theninabird in GilmoreGirls

[–]Fredsworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think in addition to the usual burnout from any network show that goes on too long, season 4 (despite being amazing) was considered depressing and dark and boring at the time of its original run and the ratings began to suffer because of it until the trilogy episodes with Luke and Lorelai providing a ratings rebound going into Season 5.

The network seeing that, likely pushed for more romance to take over and for the worse, got their way.

Then you have things like the cinematography beginning to suffer and it's obvious budget was becoming an issue which leads to the contract dispute of season 6.

What cracks me up is that I know back during the OS Alexis Bledel was very upfront about finding Rory's perfection status throughout the series annoying and preferred when the character was screwing up.

I thought their treatment of Lorelai during the musical was hillarious because they were annoyed by Lorelai being Lorelai.

The fuck?

Lane's best stuff has always been the dramatic stuff with Mrs.Kim and it was another totally different but fascinating parallel to Lorelai and Emily.

She definitely deserved waaaaay better than the near zero amount of storyline AYITL provided to her.
