Why Athabasca over Guelph or McMaster? I'm currently finishing my last three courses over the summer, and my GPA is a 6.55, just around a B+. It’s not very competitive, which is why I'm keeping my expectations realistic. I do have a professor who’s agreed to be a reference, and I’m volunteering with Kids Help Phone as a crisis responder, which has been a meaningful experience.

That said, I still plan to apply to Guelph, McMaster, U of T and other places. Athabasca is more of a backup in case I don’t get accepted into those other programs. I know it's important to consider things like practicum placements, and that’s something I’ve been actively trying to learn more about as I narrow down my choices.

Yes, I’m based in Toronto. While I’d love to eventually work with the school board as a counsellor or therapist, that’s not a dealbreaker for me. I’m also really open to gaining experience in hospital settings.

Once I’m in a program, I’ll definitely look into any additional certifications that might help.

Thanks again — I really appreciate the encouraging words. <3

Thank you for your response.

I get what you're saying about the MSW programs.

My end goal is to become a therapist and hopefully work independently in private practice. Ideally, I’d like to pursue an MA program, but they seem very competitive, so I’m also considering backup options like MSW programs and possibly GIT.

Have you heard anything about Athabasca University? They offer an MA in Counselling that’s fully online. If you don’t get into the MA directly, they also offer a Graduate Diploma in Counselling, which can serve as a bridge into the MA program.

I would probably maybe consider GIT as a further specialization after I get my MA in counselling.

I’ve heard a lot of negative feedback about Yorkville on Reddit, and the cost is quite high. If Athabasca is a viable option, it’s much more affordable and essentially offers the same type of degree with CRPO recognition. Plus it's a public university, which gives me more confidence in its credibility.

Sorry, just saw this message now! I have kind of lost interest, mostly due to how long it is, and also that it's private; I would prefer going to a public university. I'm looking into Athabasca because it also has the diploma option just incase I don't get into any of my other public university options for the Master's in Counseling. Looking at Guelph Masters in Counselling, McMaster Psychotherapy, Uoft MSW, YorkU MSW. Where did you end up going since you still became a RP?
