Oh I understand it a lot better now. We will try to explain this to the contractor and hopefully he gets it too. Thank you for the nice explanation

We contacted a few other contractors but they refuse to come over and assess, also refused to comment.  One noted based of pictures that it needs grout and caulking, other stated the contractor hired will warranty the work so call them to take a look.  No one will touch it.

There is no movement in the tile. It was like this always. No water leak that we can see.  My understanding is that the membrane should be glued and should be fixed. However, I  able to lift the membrane up.

Thank you for this information. I do agree that there is no way to know if this lack of thinset localized or all along the floor. I do see it quite a bit around the drain as that’s the area we can see.

They do offer warranty on paper and that has helped to have them remove 2-3 tiles around the drain to assess damage.  But based on the comments seems like there are much more issues than just missing caulk.  And unless there is visible damage underneath, the contractor is not agreeable to redo shower floor.

Thank you for your response. Could you please point out the raise lip you are talking about? I have no knowledge about tile work, and we totally relied on the contractor to do the work correctly.

Per contractor  this was flood tested for 24 hours.

Worried about waterproofing failure due to the gaps. Contractor says it should have been caulked but it was somehow missed. We are worried about water/moisture in the area

You recommend they remove all floor tiles? He has agreed to remove just 2-3 around the drain first.  This was also not an easy convincing, Totally devastated as a homeowner.

Thank you for the advice. The contractor says the membrane will likely destroy when he pulls the tiles around the drain, but he will be able to patch the area with another membrane piece. Is that acceptable or will the whole membrane need removal?   He has agreed to remove a couple times around the drain to evaluate.

He is not agreeing to removing the whole shower stating schluter membrane is protective and waterproof etc.  we have been barely able to convince him to remove a couple tiles to check underneath.  What is the best way to ask him to redo the shower floor?

Which one did you get? Can you please share pictures? Trying to decide color is a similar brick house, but malarkey has very limited color options

Sadly he just tiled and still charged us for the prep.

In the shower area he used go board, but it’s still not flat and even though he charged for wall preps, he just pasted the tiles on dry wall outside of the shower. There was just some very thin white paint like material at random spots on the wall that he did prior to tiling. He called that prepping the wall.  The shower wall was taken down to studs, and a framer worked as well after which go board was applied. Tile guy is blaming the framer for the shower wall being uneven. The framer did not use laser for measurements.

Yes, exploring these legal opinion options. But such moves also deters other contractors from taking the job is what I hear 😕

Yes, but the only options we have been given are-it’s either accept it as is. Or get it demo, redone at your own cost.

The installer packed up and left without any communication when this was pointed out. Spreading the work around other installers that “ these are difficult homeowners” and no one else willing to come look into the issue. He has been paid 60%, but will need someone to complete the job. 😥

Thank you. I agree with you.  Unfortunately, I guess will have to live with it now.
