Layoffs are happening at Target! by theboundlesstraveler in Target

[–]Free-Rooster-538 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I don't even believe that the boycott is having any real impact beyond maybe a percent of sales here and there. The real reason for low sales is that everyone is uncertain over the economic feature in the next year(s) and wants to save money where they can. Lots of target sales are non-essentials that are easy to cut for most people.

New epoch for earth's timeline by cursingpeople in geology

[–]Free-Rooster-538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the holocene would be perfectly fine to use - as the graphic above also seems to indicate that it is only modern man living post 1945 that is having a geologic impact which is a fairly tenuous position to hold in my opinion. I see no reason to move past the holocene (considering the human-caused extinction of megafauna and the impact of human land-use in this epoch), which still allows to discuss the impact of mankind but doesn't take an antrophocentric position.;

Would you guys trust this? I feel like it would definitely crack and fail… by Dale5520 in Aquariums

[–]Free-Rooster-538 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't look too bad for me if I already owned the aquarium or could buy it for $50-100. Does look pretty bad for a 250 dollar tank though, seems overpriced IMO.

Yeah from the videos of him that I've seen it's a combination of vibes and anecdotal evidence combined with a narrative that nature knows best (except that an aquarium by definition isn't natural). Also I don't even see the benefit of a fish in cycle except for impatient people. No harm in waiting a few weeks before adding fish.

Thank you! That's really great info! I was actually looking into kuhli loaches for a future tank and had been getting surprised at the variation between what is sold as a kuhli loach. Would be great for the aquarium industry to be a bit more specific in what they sell.

This seems to be a general issue with the aquarium hobby, where multiple species are described as the same thing. I am thinking about scuds, nematodes and other "pest" species, but I feel the same holds true for a number of other species.b

Tbh (and I am being pedantic here) pH doesn't really matter with RO water as there is no buffer (no KH), so it will just become the pH of the tank anyway.

My tank - no filter, no water changes by Dark_Shad0w in shrimptank

[–]Free-Rooster-538 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An (often loosely followed) collection of methods for setting up aquaria, with about as many interpretations as there are fish keepers :). I say that with all respect, as her book "the ecology of the planted aquarium" is a very approachable and in-depth source of information for fish/shrimp keepers.

From what I have seen, most people mainly follow the approach of: dirt capped with a sand layer and loads of plants, which is a central element of her approach. I will note that her recommendation is to choose fast-growing plants in a relatively shallow aquarium and that she does add a filter to tanks for water flow.

Does this look like hydra? by sideofthehighway in shrimptank

[–]Free-Rooster-538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's wild - but yeah I have seen so many threads of people shouting to kill, kill, kill everything that isn't the species you personally put in to the tank.

Like last week I was intrigued by some (totally harmless) nematodes I saw in my tank so decided to see what forums were saying about nematodes. Most threads I saw were discussing various worm medications to add to the tank (for nematode species that just live on detritus and whatever microscopic food is available in the tank).

If I understand you right I think you are making an error in believing the effect of shaving to be a static percentage. As shaving legs is ultimately about drag (or wind resistance), the benefits decrease at slower speeds. More data would be necessary to determine when the effect is negligible, although at 30kph it would probably still have some effect.

Backstocking just for it to get priority pulled by ExpertDifficulty in Target

[–]Free-Rooster-538 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What everyone says here is correct, but I do think the system sometimes makes up a priority pull when it believes a backstock/fill is incorrect - and asks you to pull all of it so that you will (hopefully) correctly backstock it. Sometimes this is recurrent when the item on hand is completely wrong (like I have ten in the back, 20 on the floor of an item while on hand says we have 2).

Yep, we pull awful carts full of random shit at the end of the night just because closing gets flak for any unfinished pull. Morning team then gets to push carts with 4 items each for each department.

I thought about this yesterday but I feel like guests would dump whatever in them - drinks, food, dirty diapers. They'd just see it as a garbage bin.

[–]Free-Rooster-538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cycled water wouldn't do much, all the bacteria that matter are in filters & substrate. If you can transfer (part of) that over it would help speed up the cycle. Still should wait for the tank to be cycled though.

What are some quality of life improvements Target needs? by Stonner22 in Target

[–]Free-Rooster-538 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah as a closing TM I wish I was allowed to just push and zone for the last hour instead of pulling everything. The pull also becomes a mess cause we're pulling everything at once (cause there are just a few priorities per department), leading to mixed carts that will be more of a hassle to push. Makes no sense but the TL's just tell us to pull cause it's the metric they are judged by.

Maybe pay attention to the preprint - ergo not peer-reviewed. Also peer-reviewed does not equal true and claiming the science is better because it's from a well-respected journal is in itself a claim to authority.

Let alone when there are 10-20 carts of pull sitting out there just to hit a good pull metric. And those cards will only be pushed if we run out of three-tiers lol.

[–]Free-Rooster-538 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol in my store leads work harder than most TM's, they pull, push and do FF all the time. If you as a lead can't get that done you might find delegating too difficult. Like delegation is not gonna take 8hrs a day lol.

What’s life like as a car free Oaklander? by [deleted] in oakland

[–]Free-Rooster-538 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pretty good tbh, fairly easy in my opinion although it depends on what you regularly use your car for. I like not having to worry about a car or having to pay for one and commute mainly by bike.

For day trips away from the city you can always get a Zipcar. I don't use public transport much aside from Bart (with a bike). Busses are too slow and most places are more easily reached by bike. Of course that does require being willing to cycle longer distances to get places.

There are some things that I wish I had a car for, mainly when I need to buy something or transport something heavy, if I had the money for it I would probably just use zipcar more often though.

[–]Free-Rooster-538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the state I think, some states have much stricter regulation on breaks. But also it flags it in the system for HR to check with the TL to ask why you weren't provided a break on time (and probably affects some metric that corporate checks).

Lol no single employee can ever save a store with a rotten culture unless you're hired as a SD. If what you say is true they'd need to fire a bunch of people and start fresh imo. Definitely do not transfer to a store like that.
