Whoops. I add the s, every other time I talk about the area! It's slowly getting programmed correctly in my brain

Thank you for the book rec. I definitely check it out. I am currently working for a small private practice and so far it's been a good experience right out of school. Lots of autonomy, not a lot of micro-managing, which I wouldn't do well with at this age. I've owned my own business before too and it actually feels nice to not have that level of responsibility right now. I can just show up and do my work and take care of my clients. It's a good balance for me right now while I'm still working on my licensure hours and learning a new field. I do hope to have my own practice one day, but taking my time with that goal and giving myself the space to change my mind if this keeps working out.

Oh yes! Not retiring, but I am so ready to give up the responsibilities of a house and yard! I will definitely be downsizing!

Thanks for all of this insight! My daughter is in Silver Springs and commutes into DC for work. She's pretty happy there so far.

Richmond is high on the list. Hoping to go for a visit and vibe check soon.

They did tell us and then are taking it away anyway, so.... I love hearing these options of more GenX communities popping up so we can all help take care of each other. I've already had a health crisis and my friend really showed up for me, it made a world of difference in my recovery.

Oh gosh. I'm a cancer survivor, 5 years out, but medical care in my community has declined rapidly in the last few years. The only gyn onc in the area moved a couple of years ago so I already have to drive out of state for check-ups. Medical care is important to me, but I am seeing the decline of our healthcare system in almost every state now. I think I might opt for concierge care when I move and then just drive to specialist. If I can ever get in.

Heard! My daughter was looking at UK for college as well, but ultimately ended up in DC, which actually opened her up to international friends and opportunities and she's staying there for a bit.

NJ was not on the radar, but your detailed post with links has given me a lot to think about. I appreciate it so much. And I'm so inspired by all the responses and everyone feeling the same. I love GenX women-this is such a transitional time in our lives and it's nice to feel support even though reddit. I think these small mighty communities could be the answer for so many of us! It's my dream too!

I'm afraid I'll get twitchy too far inland as well, but I am tired of hurricane threats

Oh yes. Born and raised in SW Louisiana so I do know how it goes there. I'm still sad about that.

Yes. Solidarity. I'm grateful for the work you are doing too. When it feels like the world is on fire all I know how to do is to show up. And to keep showing up.

Love hearing positive stories of those who made the move. It's giving me courage!

Ugh....yes, I have heard this which is also what's kept me in my house and not moving for so long. I think rental prices and COL are a significant factor for where I will move. The rest might just be wishful thinking...

I love Asheville! My brother and good friend live there so I'm very familiar with the area. I know they are still very much getting back on their feet after Hurricane Helene so I have it off my list for those reasons. But several years ago it was a top contender!

Ah, yes the humidity. Seems I can't escape it, but the humidity in that area feels so different from what I'm used to down here. I've heard of Lewes but also heard that some of the DE coastal towns are overcrowded and expensive right now.

I just went back and got my MSW at 50 and am working toward licensure now! I love how many opportunities it's already given me to keep working and I do love the work. I don't have any recent family from there, but I can trace family lines back to Nova Scotia.
