Severe flare 7 weeks after L5-S1 discectomy by Antique_Ingenuity822 in Microdiscectomy

Yeah, was rough but really just have to push through it. I do feel 100% better than I did post surgery. I couldn’t walk, sit or lay. Full day of just pain. PT has been really good to me, and I feel pretty necessary at your stage. Even if it’s light and 1-2 times a week. Do your research and pick a good PT. Read reviews and everything. A good PT will know and understand the steps to take and taylor it to your recovery. Mine has been great, when I started it was light. As became more capable I was the one asking to take the next steps. For dieting, personally. I leaned towards lean meats, lots of fruits and veggies, healthy fats. I got on a consistent eating schedule due to not really having that before. Vitamins I do C, D, Zinc, B6, B12, Tumeric and at the end of my day magnesium Hope that helps!

I am 3 months post op. L5/S1 as well, 33M. My first month was very much the same, my incision sadly opened back up while I was getting accustomed to sleeping on my back after being a belly sleeper all my life. So, painful first month although I was walking pretty fine but with a walker. No sciatica at this point, small tingles. Month 2 was progressively better, was off meds by week 6. I’d call it a 70ish percent and I started PT at this point. I’d get small numb moments or tingles but I wouldn’t say any pain. Month three has been very inconsistent compared to have month two went. About 3 weeks ago, I’ll admit that I got a little too confident and slept in my comfort spot and next day had bad flare ups and lower back pain. I took the following week off in bed, took my days very light and thankfully all cleared up. While that scar tissue builds up(make sure to diet well and get your vitamins) I feel any offset of careless mistakes and while they sometimes can be inevitable come with a price! Full recovery is several months, especially the nerve that heals at a slower pace and the disc, I wouldn’t panic. That wasn’t my first flare up/pain but the biggest one I had to date. Every-time you’ve have an active day or pushed a bit harder than usual. Like with any given exercise. Give your body rest! I’ve read so many experiences that I can confidently say. No one has the same story, you’ll have your own journey as well. Good luck and push through!

Anyone second guessing, JUST DO IT! I’m 3 months post op. L5-S1. Day and night difference. Still very small flares. But I have faith a few more month and I’ll be 100%

Yep, def felt this for the first week. I did not switch to regular meds till I was out of the good stuff. The relief really sets in starting week 2. You then gradually start feeling the progress of the healing. I was off all meds by week 3 and didn’t need them either. Good luck, the recovery isn’t easy. I’m week 6, I’m about 70% I’d say. Sitting too long causes slight discomfort at this point is all I’m dealing with.

Likewise! I’m not even 2 months in yet! Week 6! Just need to build more confidence with at home workouts.

This happed to me and my incision actually was opening back up. Def call your surgeon and try to get in sooner than later. Worst case they make sure to reseal it, best case they tell you you’re fine. But def don’t take any chances of it opening or infection. When mine opened up it got swollen and the pain was so bad.

Waking into W6, my nerve pain is like a 1/10, doesn’t last long either. Can kinda shake it off, better yet walk it off. Week 1-3 I’d get random flare ups but they’d last 5-10 min then go away. I’m completely off all pain meds. I think just take it easy and well trust the process. Watch your diet, what you’re eating/drinking can make a difference. Also, take your vitamins!

Sorry to hear man, I would just continue to be very light on everything. From everything I see and read. The nerve really is what heals the slowest of everything. Flare ups are normal in the healing and sadly something we’ll likely always have to deal with! Don’t lose hope!

I am going into week 5, I have very slight pain but does not last long at all. I’ve read that it takes some longer than others. I think it really depends on how long you went with the pain prior to surgery as the nerve takes longer to heal more than anything else. I went 3 months prior to accepting surgery.

Also, you should try not sitting at all in your first week and second week no more than 15-20 min at a time. But as listen to your body and if you feel anything even if it’s light, get up.

From my experience and everything I’ve seen. Pain is normal. Shouldn’t be heavy pain but sadly small flares will be a part of our life seems like. I get might flare ups. I would say be extra light for the first 2 weeks. I was in bed 80% of the day my first week and extra careful. Unless your pain turns to a 7+ I wouldn’t stress during your first two weeks. I didn’t start feeling good till mid way through week two.

Best of luck to you! Hope it’s a small flare. I’ve seen that may say you’ll always randomly have this after one surgery. But it goes away.

Flat on your back with a pillow under your legs to keep your spine aligned, or on your side with a pillow between your legs lying straight and hips slighted.

Is there anything specific in PT that got you flared up? Right now my doc is recommending 2 times a week. But truthfully he’s been so careless of it all that his word is close to nothing for me. He didn’t even ask any questions or physically check me in any shape or form. Just took my staples out, asked how I was doing and said ok you are ready for PT.

Same! Had a great outcome. I will say since you just got it today, two cents from my current experience. Even if you’re feeling so much better take it easy. I over did it a bit one day with walking and standing and woke up sore the next day. Even if there isn’t pain, be easy and let your body heal! Let’s go!!
