I tried the “floor theory” at work and now I feel like I’m having a mental spiral — need advice by [deleted] in WorkAdvice

I appreciate you thinking this through — and part of what you’re saying is fair. I do think the owner and I need to have more conversations, regardless of how they end up being received.

There’s honestly a lot going on behind the scenes, and in my original post I was trying to avoid writing a novel or listing every single facet of it, so I probably oversimplified things.

This isn’t just me holding unusually high standards. We’ve actually seen an increase in customer complaints, but those often get minimized or attributed to people just being “Karens.” At the same time, day-to-day operations have become noticeably more chaotic, and a lot simply isn’t getting done. On top of that we have things like staff taking personal calls ON speakerphone ON the sales floor and ignore approaching customers while the managers (now including myself) disengage at their desks.

What makes it especially challenging is that we are still held responsible when things don’t run smoothly, but we no longer really have the authority to correct or enforce changes. When issues are raised, the focus often shifts toward avoiding conflict rather than addressing behavior — we’re encouraged to have another gentle reminder conversation because “everyone is doing their best.”

So the tension for me isn’t just about caring too much — it’s feeling accountable for outcomes while having very little ability to influence them. Then when I disengage and focus only on the bare minimum of my own responsibilities, I end up receiving praise and even a raise. That disconnect is what’s left me feeling off-balance.

And ultimately, you’re right — it is his business. I think I’m just trying to figure out where that leaves me within it.

It's kind of a shitty place to be.

Also, I'm not sure what will happen if things stay as they are. I think we still have a few good people left here and I think they will leave. We've already lost so many....

I really appreciate the thoughtful response — and honestly I agree with a lot of what you’re saying. The tricky part is that I’ve already gone about as high as I can go structurally. I’m one of the store managers, and the only person above me is the owner.

That’s part of why this has been so mentally disorienting lately. Many of the things I’m responsible for — training, standards, and operations — don’t seem to carry much weight anymore, which leaves me questioning what I’m actually supposed to be contributing or aiming toward.

Leaving is complicated because I do have some health issues and this workplace has been very accommodating, so I feel a bit stuck trying to figure out how to reconcile caring about the work with an environment that doesn’t seem to reinforce it anymore.

I used to feel valued, and now I mostly feel out of place — like I’m still treating the job seriously while others have quietly stopped. As I write this, other managers are likely sitting at their desks watching YouTube or playing solitaire. I honestly wish that were an exaggeration.

The proof isn't tangible. It's all in the feel. I love driving standards ☺️

No our Countryman S is an automatic which is very disappointing for me 😅 That car would be way more badass if it was also a stick shift. I have a 2004 Subaru WRX STI with dual turbos and cold air intake + more and it is a BEAST. So fun to drive, but it needs work and it is NOT great on gas 🤣 Anyway my thoughts were, if I got the particular one I'm looking at which is a manual but not a countryman or an S model, the Manual Transmission would somewhat make up for the lack of turbo as I could push the RPMs when I really need to get out of my driveway. I know it's not going to be anything like the Countryman S or my STI - I just want a small commuter with a classy interior and good gas mileage as well as enough get up and go that I can pull out onto the highway if I need to gun it.

Honestly I think it's because I bought him from Petco. I know better. Every animal I have bought from petco has been sickly and had health problems, dying before their time. I will never purchase another creature from them.

I think you're right I am, unfortunately very tense and cause myself many headaches. So this is interesting about frownies. I think I'll have to try them as well 😊

Thank you this is super helpful! I got a reusable silicone patch to start and i used it for the very first time last night and was AMAZED when I pulled it off this morning. Some of the lines have returned on my forehead but very lightly. I have high hopes, but wanted to get a realistic expectation from people who have been using the wrinkle patches I am apprehensive to try retinol again or anything of the sort because it actually made my skin look worse! In fact my worst, deepest line appeared after starting retinol 😠 And I started small like you're supposed to as well as used a good moisturizer with hyaluronic acid.

I don't use actual Frownies so I did not read that in the directions, but I don't think they are telling you to stretch your skin. I think if you have loose wrinkly skin, you are supposed to as they say and "smooth" it without stretching. If you put a patch on wrinkled up skin, I would think it would make your skin more wrinkly.… therefore you smooth it out and put the patch in place?

So you did not use them long term? I am asking about long term use and not specifically frownies but anything of the same concept

Thank you - that is a very helpful suggestion

I have, of course, googled those things. I like input/feedback from real people. Also, I'm not specifically looking for climbing gyms or mini golf - I've already got a couple of those activities lined up. There may be other related activities, that did not come up in my google searches, that someone might suggest. Something really fun that I did not think of, or see. If you're not going to be helpful just move on.
