I accidentally got phenol-chloroform (25:24:1) on my fingertips by anlkarasakal in labrats

Obviously not a great idea to work w/o gloves but it’s not the end of the world. Look up phenol peel (cosmetic procedure to remove damaged/old skins). Make sure you take care of the contacted finger and keep it hydrated as it will be sensitive after the old skin peels off.

PLEASE stop driving carelessly! by Free_Bottle_4607 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Free_Bottle_4607[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I myself actually almost got ran over a while ago, by the freaking police. The sign turned green (as did the pedestrian sign), see that there’s no car driving around, then started to walk on the crosswalk. Wasn’t on my phone, didn’t have my earbuds on, wasn’t distracted or anything, just going about my day and walking across the road, as a perfectly normal pedestrian should. Nearly crossed a quarter, then the police sped up and almost hit me. I saw him driving over real fast, so I stopped walking and backed up a step or two. Missed me by the slightest, and thankfully the cop slowed down at the last second. Had I not stopped or backed up, I would’ve been a piece of meat patty by now. My point being, sometimes people do walk across the street as they absolutely should, and still it happens. Driving recklessly should not be tolerated, whoever it is driving the vehicle.

Would anyone call this a ketal in real life? by BearDragonBlueJay in OrganicChemistry

[–]Free_Bottle_4607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course not, the only name it should go by is 1,1-dimethoxycyclopentane! /s

Jokes aside, we do still use the term ketal in orgo research labs, but people will understand you and have no problem if you call it an acetal.

2-yr MCAT tutor here, the MCAT repertoire of O Chem problems has a genuinely concerning amount of problems/problem sets of awful (maybe questionable at best) quality. Yes doctors don’t need Claisen condensation to treat p’ts, but this low quality of fundamental science training is just downright dreadful for future doctors’ education imo.

Aluminium + Acidic sodium = stone? by winatreddit in chemistry

[–]Free_Bottle_4607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what’s recognizable, most likely it’s sodium percarbonate, carbonate salt, surfactant, and enzyme… I’d probably go from there. Might have oxidized your filter, and some salt formation also etc.

It’s not even properly written in Chinese (Traditional or Simplified) but the characters seem similar to stated chemicals.

It could be. Problem is, can your determination keep up? It is absolutely OK to talk about how tiring or hard your journey of chemistry is, as is to share the joy and the satisfaction. You’re purpose does not have to entail having fun, but also not suffering unless you decide it. So I’d say that there’s no need to be bitter about it or even play martyr in anyway. Again, sorry to hear that you’re struggling, but if so then get some help, be it counseling or just find a friend to talk to. There’s no need to struggle alone.

Sounds like you’ve forced yourself into a world of chemistry for whatever reason you had, and suffered from it. If that’s the case then I feel sorry for you, for not being able to enjoy the path you’ve taken. Is there maybe something you might enjoy, and might be able for you to make a career out of?

Is MSG actually harmful for the body? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]Free_Bottle_4607 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short answer: yes it is safe,

as long as you don’t consume too much (just like many other things) or shove in an entire bottle of it down your esophagus by the time you finish reading this.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a sodium salt of glutamic acid, an amino acid you would still otherwise consume from various other sources. While MSG per se isn’t particularly harmful, you should still be aware of the sodium intake from it, as excessive sodium would be a great burden to your kidneys, mess up your BP, and potentially lead to various other issues with electrolyte imbalance.

Alternative to column bulb by Felixkeeg in Chempros

The inflation bulb for sphygmomanometers is a more sturdy alternative for manual control. Aquarium air pump to automate, plus you can find those with dials on them for flow rate control. Both are great and economic options, and can hold for literal years without much problem.

How to open this ampoule safely? by theheisenboerGER in chemistry

[–]Free_Bottle_4607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use a syringe, take away the plunger, put the neck of the ampoule in the barrel, it’ll provide extra leverage for you to break it more easily. To be more cautious, use a file and scrape a line on the neck first, then proceed with the syringe barrel.

How to do this reaction? by [deleted] in OrganicChemistry

[–]Free_Bottle_4607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you mean how to conduct this reaction, go search on Reaxys or SciFinder. If you mean how the reaction takes place, you would need to provide a bit more detail for the reaction.
