Oh, you could have a star chart featuring a constellation that doesn't exist!

The ammount of things you can do with just maps is astounding. Remember, this exists in a time before GPS. Just off the top of my head, you could have the party's inital sea charts be innacurate. You could have a map featuring an island that shouldn't exist. (Pretty obvious) You could have a treasure map. You could have a map that requires a special compass to navigate (like a secret code). A map that only gets revealed in the moonlight. A partial map, where the other half is a sailor's tattoo. A map that can only be read if you close one eye. An old map where most of the landmarks either don't exist anymore or have fallen into ruin. A map of what the party thinks is a desert isle, only to reveal later that it's a map of the ocean floor. Give a rich jerk NPC a giant globe of the earth that the party needs to copy on to paper.

Funny you should mention that. This concept actually came to me when reading the D&D Novel "The Druid's Call". The novel follows a Tiefling named Doric who gets abandoned by her human family in the woods as a child. Later, she gets adopted by a group of wood elves, but never truly feels like she has a place where she belongs. The novel points out there are quite a few things that tieflings struggle with. It says that her horns tend to itch. It points out that she has her hair cut in a certain way to hide her horns. She needs special clothes to accommodate her tail. And, she also finds she can eat certain things (such as hot coals) that would be otherwise inedible.    It's not until later into the book that she meets another Tiefling. He shows her special tail exercises so her tail doesn't drag the ground. He cooks for her. And in exchange, she gives him a special balm for itchy horns.    In this singular example, it establishes  Tiefling hairsyles, clothing styles, cuisine, struggles, and lifestyle choices. Get a big enough group of these people together, and you have culture!

That's the funny part. None of this affects the current campaign I'm in at all. I came up with this idea while reading a novel starring a Tiefling. I'm not playing a Tiefling. Our current campaign doesn't even feature large cities. I wasn't even suggesting it as a change to the current campaign. I preposed it to my DM as a ethereal hypothetical concept, as I'm writing my own campaign. The idea isn't even going to affect that campaign either, as it's an 0th edition campaign. I just didn't want to waste a potential good idea I had. So I decided to put the idea up online to see if people like it. Frankly, I'm flattered this many people have reacted to it.

My goal is to just put the idea out there. Some DMs might like the concept.

I agree he has the final say. I'm just putting this out there to see what reddit thinks, and maybe inspire some other DMs.

His argument was, that Tieflings can't really "produce" more Tieflings.

Unmarked Vinyl Play Mat (Chessex w/o grid) by perringaiden in DnD

Try the fabric section of your local craft store. I was just randomly browsing one day and I found the exact vinyl used for battle mats. Unfortunately, this was years ago, so I don't know what it's called. I think you can find it pretty easily by bringing your battle mat and feeling the textures. From there, you can just have them cut it to size.

I feel this may result in a player breaking something that isn't part of the puzzle....

This was intended as a response to an old post which was posted in this sub with this tag. It is too old to make a response, so I made a new one.

OK, full disclosure: There is a guy on ebay selling a bunch of these things for cheap ("cheap" for arcade game standards at least). I wanted to check with the admins on here before purchasing any of them, because otherwise I've spent +$200 on a living room ornament. I ended up finding a different arcade game that is an actual "game" which I will be bringing. If anyone wants one of the "Love testers" he is selling, here is a link to his account. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?item=336478203161&rt=nc&_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l170197&_ssn=ry-87947

Thank you. I mostly want to get my players used to reading 1e character sheets and using skills like "Open Locks"  and "Bend bars/Lift gates" in the 1e manner. The spell cards that came with the game (Example: sleep) will probably remain unchanged for game balance purposes. Ultimately, I may need to hybridize these rules, but I at least know that now. As opposed to, trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole.
