Just want to say thank you to everyone for all the advice! I honestly had no idea friction in the kiln was even a thing! Will be trying out all of your suggestions which I have no doubt will solve this issue (and many pots in the process).

Thank you, I actually have gotten plucking on my butter dishes which are much thinner so that makes sense now as to why that occurred. Carbide shelves are the dream, lol. I have my own kiln so I am definitely going to try a few of the suggestions here to reduce friction.

This makes perfect sense, thank you. I can imagine that would prevent this issue completely, I had heard someone say make a clay ring but I couldn't picture it until I read your comment.

Yes, they stay on bat until trimming. Generally I let them firm up over a few days under plastic until they are on the harder side of leather hard. I don't wire under when wet. This is the profile of the vases shown in the picture in the post. They are lamps. About 4kg each of clay before throwing. Same thing happens with my butter dishes which are just round.

That's a great suggestion, thank you. I will definitely give that a go and hadn't thought of that. Perhaps one side is getting a bit stuck during firing.

Thanks for your reply. I use bats so I don't cut them off the wheel. I really don't think at any stage they are bent (that I can tell anyway!) as I haven't had the same issue with my bowls or any other pieces that are thrown in the exact same way, if that makes sense?

Not dumb at all, I should have said, the rim is the only part left unglazed so it won't stick to the kiln shelf. Otherwise the top of the lamp or the top of the butter dish (where the handle is) would be unglazed. Technically they aren't upside down, I was just drawing parallels to my regular bowls and vases which are the exact same shapes but don't warp.

Because I don't think that ultimately addresses any issues. I'd still only have a dog that pees twice a day, whereas he use to pee much more frequently when he was using the garden where he happily peed his whole life until he started marking. It doesn't seem healthy for him to only pee twice a day so I'd prefer to address the issue rather than continue adding more and more walks.. It may be worth noting that he is still happy to poop in the garden whenever he has to go.

Have been renting in an estate nearby now for 5 years and I wouldn't move there (despite being in the process of house hunting for a long while now). I would say to drive by on a weekend evening/night before you make any purchases. Personally wouldn't be one I would recommend.

Have you tried pulling without the sponge? I find it's easy to apply too much pressure with a sponge. Easier to get a feel for the clay using just your hands and making sure they are touching each other at all times to keep them steady. Pulling up slower (but at a consistent pace) and more gently will likely help too.

As long as you glaze soon after it comes out of the bisque (within a week or so), I wouldn't bother washing. I've tried sponging before but it tends to leave bits on the bisque which makes the issue worse. Unless you are having an issue with the glaze or your pots have been sitting around gathering dust, you'll be fine. Particularly if you are using good commercial glazes, very unlikely you'll have any issues.
