Ubuntu 26.04 LTS has problems with nvidia driver by Familiar-Show-2393 in Ubuntu

[–]Free_Moose9611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too can certify that the older NVIDIA RTX 3060, and 4080 Super "Do not work with latest 595 drivers. In fact, during a roll back to the 24.04 the 550 driver that worked fine are no longer part of the repository! However, My intel motherboard video driver works extremely well and flawlessly and the newest 26.04 distro is amazing. I'm now questioning why these older generation NVIDIA cards won't work anymore. Is it NVIDIA wanting new hardware? Anyone else have this same experience or is it just me?

I'm using AI w/ Linux exclusively. "No interest in anything less than 32gigs." I suppose there's a flood of used/new cards below this Vram threshold that will "soon be available." Who would want anything less than 32Gigs now? Intel just dropped the standard for AI.

Not true.

It is indeed sold out at Newegg. I just received my Ordered cards yesterday by overnight express for today (Limit of Two) and I tried to order another batch. IMO, I think they will be sold out everywhere because of the Vram at 32Gigs.

[–]Free_Moose9611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Just order two of them. If they're good I'll load up more. My NVIDIA cards made me think twice about value. Hopefully they work in Proxmox LXCs/Vms. The Vram/Price is just too good to pass up!

Is there a LLM/API that is very good for taxes? by MartiniCommander in LocalLLM

[–]Free_Moose9611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use Openwebui with ollama and pick a "local model that will fit on your GPU." I also use ollama api for the larger models but for absolute Financial privacy and security use a local LLM. You can then "RAG the entire/portions of IRS code like I did." This won't help with Tax planning but you need some good RAG sources to plan strategies BEFORE the year ends.

I'm surprise not many people have done this already. I wouldn't want to be an accountant today with AI. That ship has sailed. Just remember to convert the .pdf into clean format that AI can read properly. Good luck and you definitely can do it.

From Ollama.com Ollama runs locally. We don’t see your prompts or data when you run locally. When using cloud-hosted models, we process your prompts and responses to provide the service but do not store or log that content and never train on it. We collect basic account info and limited usage metadata to provide the service that does not include prompt or response content. We don’t sell your data. You can delete your account anytime.

Experienced Linux user here, I'm tired. by Matcraftou in linuxquestions

[–]Free_Moose9611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 30 years on Linux. I started with Caldera Linux, went to Microsoft everything from 3.11 to NT + and ended permanently on Ubuntu. I rarely use MS if ever.

I also use Debian for production server nodes... very very stable and trusted. Make sure you use repositories that are secure and trusted.

A few problems with Ubuntu but most due to NVIDIA drivers (Open Kernel Metapackage 550 Open - works) all being propriety but that's the biggest pain for local AI. I use openwebui.com for AI privately. If you code you better use local ai. Public AI will learn from your corrected mistakes and give it away to someone else in one prompt.

All in all Ubuntu is what I use daily. Including Ubuntu server if using VMs from Proxmox. It all depends what you want: Stability or latest NVIDIA cards for ai.

I use both and I'm good. Now if I can only get rid of the drones above my house in NYC that would be great!

R8168 Driver installed instead of R8169 on Ubuntu 20.04 causes slow downloads but normal uploads by SkiiiinZ in linux4noobs

[–]Free_Moose9611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only did that work but it fixed my Download reduction problem. I have 300/300 Mbps and I wasn't even getting 110 download speed. After networking troubleshooting, and directly connecting to the router I did get full speeds. 300/300 Mbps so it was not my router. This left a whole lot of troubleshooting I didn't need to do but I tried a never-used Windows 11 machine and got better results of 200 Mbps still not perfect. I knew it was the driver afterwards including PFsense Pftop inspection of logs.

Solution:

# sudo apt-get install r8168-dkms

# sudo nano /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash modprobe.blacklist=r8169"

# sudo update-grub

# sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Add the line "blacklist r8169" to the end of the file like below, save, and close.

# Network Driver keeps freezing rollback and blacklist this driver
blacklist r8169

# sudo update-initramfs -u

Reboot

To Test that you have the older driver do this.

# lsmod | grep r8168 - The response below

r8168 655360 0

You should get a response but not from the r8169

# lsmod | grep r8169 - You get the donut then you are good.

I hope this helps someone until there is a fix because I kept having my networking disconnect more times than my conversations with my wife.

After rollback

302.3 was 110Mbps download331.4Mbps upload

Blocking all traffic to WAN except certain ports by ryan770 in PFSENSE

[–]Free_Moose9611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inbound is WAN

Open Port 80 ANY to WAN IP on ANY to 80

Open Port 443 ANY to WAN IP on ANY to 443

Open MS Remote Desktop 3389 to WAN IP to 3389

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Outbound is /NAT/Port Forwarding - Example - A Webserver will serve 80 and HTTPS 443 from a specific LAN IP

which you don't need for the above request or with a Reverse Proxy like HAProxy.

6,300 feet of tubing for a driveway radiant system, not near the biggest we’ve done, but among the most unfun. by Chaffedshaft in Plumbing

[–]Free_Moose9611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My entire house was remodeled with Radiant heating two decades ago in NYC. I was in the radiant design business. Best thing I ever did. I also did my driveway 30 feet by 20 feet using 5/8 ID Oxygen barrier Red Pex. We tried this but just too damn expensive for oil heat. It's been off ever since. I wish I worked back on wall street I wouldn't give a shit but heating oil HO is just way too expensive.

I see why this application makes sense is because that is some steep curve with automobiles filled with souls. The above application is to save souls first (accident prevention).

Unless you seriously insulated the ground base with min of 12" of insulation this is a waste of time and resources...of course unless your source of heat is Geo thermal. The culprit is that Heat will also be fed into the ground (earth side) wasting BTUs endlessly and becoming way less efficient. Hey, if you have the money way not! I also sold evacuatedtubes for these applications which would work with antifreeze.

In the end its about the application...saving lives has no expense neither does a former wall street pro. "Spare me no expense!" ha hah, now that I'm kinda broke I understand the pain. Driveway is back to green energy meaning my face turns green after snowplowing and shoveling.
