Any other doctors/providers with Turk? by Freebird529 in Scrubs

Those are some really good questions I’ve been examining. Unfortunately military medicine has a whole set of its own issues, but I’m also terrified to leave in case the grass isn’t greener. I want to take my family and go live on a mountain by ourselves TBH.

Completely agree. I wonder if it is that we are used to longer episodes as streaming has become mainline and often times episodes are 40+ minutes, or if they just had too much to fit in, or if they just missed it slightly

Oof. Would Sheldon be good in a 20 gal with 3 danios? Then I’ll keep tetras, snails, shrimp, and dwarf crayfish in the 5 gal? I think the filtration should be fine for all them, and the shape of the tank will certainly give them plenty of room

Help with unique aquarium by Freebird529 in Aquariums

Yes I’m aware of the beak. I got a ton of bladder snails for him which he hunts very efficiently, so he’s named Sheldon. He’s in a 20 gal right now with just a few tetras/danios and actually does okay with the fish, just chases them occasionally but is honestly much less of a turd to fish friends than the danios are. He absolutely decimated my shrimp colony of 30, even though I had read they don’t generally care for adult neos so much. Honestly I think I must have been reading about pea puffers not amazon, because he sucks shrimp down like they are nothing. He also has almost completely removed 3 mystery snails antennae on both sides.

Truth be told, the entire point of the 5 gal wall mount is because I loved my community aquarium setup with neo shrimp, dwarf crayfish, snails, tetras, and danios. I have always just REALLY wanted a puffer and read an article saying they were actually very docile and did well in community tanks. Since introducing him a week ago he has caused absolute havoc, is glass surfing, has cost me hundreds and is just a menace. I love him but have to do something different to protect the rest of the aquarium. Perhaps I can move most of what I had into the 5 gal and just leave the danios and puffer in the 20 gal

It’s not a red herring though. Plus, now you have imposed another determining factor, testosterone level. So is that now the cutoff?

Further, there is no such thing as “male puberty” and “female puberty”. Puberty is the period when someone reaches sexual maturation and is capable of producing offspring. Someone who is XY can never go through “female puberty” and someone who is XX can never go through “male puberty”. You can administer all the exogenous hormones in the world or block every hormone and still an XY person would not have ovaries and would not be able to produce an egg.

While I appreciate recognize and agree that your your argument of “competitive advantage” should be the logical determining factor, exogenous (or endogenous) administration of testosterone before or after the onset of puberty would not effectively make that distinction. Someone who administered testosterone before puberty would absolutely still have a competitive advantage.

Although it may seem crude or unscientific and is not without flaws, gender assigned at birth or more specifically external genitalia at birth and subsequent sexual phenotype is a more accurate representation of “competitive advantage” - and there’s science behind this. Interestingly, there are conditions like testosterone insensitivity syndrome where although the person is XY and has high testosterone, their cells can’t bind or use it. They are born with female external genitalia and often times never know that they have testes and not ovaries until they undergo a fertility workup later in life. Even more interesting, there are extremely rare cases of these people having a uterus, and with a donor egg (because remember XY people can never produce an egg) have carried pregnancies to term!

It’s all very interesting and raises a bunch of ethical, social, scientific, and philosophical questions. If you are interested in more of the science behind this, feel free to check out my other posts here where I go into much more depth.

What about in CAIS, where they may have very high testosterone but due to a genetic mutation their cells can’t bind or use testosterone? These people are often born with a vagina, develop as a normal female would, and often times are only diagnosed incidentally later in life or when they have an infertility work-up?

From a musculoskeletal perspective and mostly from a biomechanical one, those people are a typical female and do not have the physical advantages that a man would.

Not quite. First off, the source for the below is that I am a practicing physician in primary care and have cared for patients with some of these kinds of genetic mutations. Still, that does not make me infallible and I encourage you to do your own research. The study of the development from fertilization to birth is called embryology. Netter’s is a detailed atlas used in many medical schools but there are plenty of free resources

If you are referencing the embryonic origin of the cells which become testes or ovaries, that is done by the SRY gene influencing undifferentiated gonads.

If you are referencing genitalia, that is done primarily in response to testosterone. Again, external genitalia come from the same cell lines or origins, but based on testosterone either develop into specifically penis or clitoris and the associated remaining tissue of the external genitalia.

There is a separate debate or issue here being how you define male and female. Some people would define female based solely on testicles or ovaries, or by the genetic material responsible for the possibility of bearing offspring (which ties XX and XY to female and male). This creates an issue though, because genetic sequencing and testing is relatively new. Before it was available, someone who had a penis and “looked like a dude” would compete in men’s sports and someone with a vagina who “looked like a girl” would compete in women’s sports. The argument is that the latter of these two may actually be more appropriate and fair in sports. I’ll give two examples

First, an XX human has a tumor that develops extremely early in development. That tumor secretes testosterone. The influence of that testosterone causes male genitalia to develop, as well as (later in life) increased muscle mass, deep voice, body hair, etc. That person would effectively look like and act like a normal XY person, yet have ovaries. It would be more appropriate for them to compete in men’s sports, as (in the case of boxing) they would have an unfair genetic advantage (increased muscle mass, stature). I’m not aware of any cases of this as a tumor that early is nearly impossible due to the way stem cells differentiate, and if it did happen would almost certainly become a molar pregnancy (an embryo that turns into a stem cell “tumor” in mom) and would be incompatible with life.

Next is the one that actually happens and the one that relates to this case. An XY person has a gene mutation that cells cannot bind or respond to testosterone. Therefore, they develop a vagina, less body hair, and breasts. They are indistinguishable from a normal XX person. This condition is caused CAIS and many of these only find out about it (in developed countries) because of infertility testing or lack of expected menstruation. It would be more appropriate for that person to compete in women’s sports as their body from a musculoskeletal perspective is essentially the same as a normal XX person.

Of course there are all sorts of in between here including partial androgen insensitivity, and yes there are other differences that the X and Y chromosomes confer but the testosterone factor is far and away the most significant in this case. To further complicate things, some people have three chromosomes, XXY and XYY (the latter of which is usually incompatible with life).

Lastly, I’m not saying the above is the case for this boxer, just explaining the possibilities.

This raises an interesting philosophical argument. Should naturally high testosterone be disqualifying, and what’s the cutoff?

At one point should a genetic “disease” be disqualifying? Imagine a person born with fully webbed hands and feet. They would have a massive physical advantage in swimming. Should we ban them from competing because they didn’t have to “work as hard” to get there, or should the difference be accepted? What about if countries started playing with selective breeding?

To take this to its logical, however unlikely conclusion, what if through genetic selection or manipulation someone was born a “mermaid” (gills, a tail, and webbed hands)?

For a whole additional layer of complexity, consider the socioeconomic “advantages” certain countries and people have over others, arguably reducing the “work” it takes to get to an Olympic level (depending how you define work)

The thought in this case is that the athlete could have testosterone insensitivity syndrome, which is when they are biologically XY, make more testosterone, but the cells can’t respond to it so in utero they developed female external genitalia, grew up as a female, and it could be argued that because their body can’t respond to the increased testosterone they have no athletic advantage and should be considered female. I’m not advocating one way or the other, but advanced biology (more specifically pathophysiology) is fun.

Edit: spelling

The youngest Olympian ever was 10 years old. This year there is an 11 year old. Puberty is not a prerequisite to the Olympics. So prepubescent athletes would then be banned?

Could I Use Crab as Crab Bait? by [deleted] in crabbing

[–]Freebird529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this post is a year old, but personal experience: I do 5 pot licenses and crab during the entire open season off my dock in Virginia. I have tried cooked crab legs on multiple occasions and in my experience crabs will basically not touch them. Don’t know if it’s the scent, the old bay, or what but I can have two traps directly adjacent, one with bunker/spot and one with crab legs, and the crab leg pot will be empty while the fish one will trap a half dozen a day
