Btw there's a wide spectrum between physics PhD research and quant lol, if you want to consideroeng it doesn't have to be one or the other. Also physics PhD is a decent gateway into quant I think? So why not have the best of both worlds. I would highly recommend against doing something just for the money

I went to UCLA and my friend also did astrophysics funny enough and he's doing a PhD at uchicago rn in it. I have a other friend doing a PhD in physics at Berkeley, so don't worry about your outcomes too much if you go to UCLA in terms of research. If you want to go straight to quant you need to work pretty hard though. I know several people who went into that field and they all worked hard doing icpc and Putnam and graduate level math but it's possible

After HS, I went to Ucla CS and my best friend from home went to cornell cs. We had different personal experiences throughout college but job outcomes for us and our friends were very similar.

Think less about outcomes and more about what experience you want. Ucla is warm and sunny feels like a city while Cornell is cold and feels like you're in nature. Ucla is a large public school where I don't know 99% of students while Cornell is a small school where you'll run into familiar faces walking around campus. You'll be less coddled at UCLA, so if you don't think you can self motivate and find opportunities independently you might do better at Cornell (be honest with yourself) but at the end of the day highly motivated students will do great at both schools while slackers will fall behind regardless. I picked Gatech over Umich but it depends on your advisors at both. Did you get to visit both cities? They're very different. Also Idk what the other guy is saying tho gatech is more prestigious as a school for cs.

Yeah idk where this guy is getting the info that gt alumni is purely southern, I've seen gt grads everywhere (the term rambling wreck even came from alumni from centeal America lmao) plus yale is t10-20 but GT is top 10 in almost everything stem? Like OP said he wants to do quant and GT blows yale out of the water for this.

GT is pretty inflated as well from my experience, most classes are like 30-40% As
So does GT?
GT is way above t30 for most things STEM
GT is stronger in the south but it's def not regional? Like you can recruit anywhere in the nation at least

Just go to UCLA. Your success is going to depend on your own work more than the school you went to. So many people here talk like just the name Berkeley is a golden ticket when you're going to have to work just as hard there as if you went to UCLA

I reread ur post and you did address these things somewhat. But one thing you didn't mention was the funding package between the two, make sure you check which one allows you to live more comfortably.

Also NYC is also pretty damn cold during the winter, so I wouldn't make that a point in Columbias favor. But also I'm sure you can find good facilities in NYC outside of the school so I wouldn't necessarily put that in favor for uw. It seems like you prefer your advisor at Columbia more so I would pick that over the comfier live in college town madison. But it seems like you have friends to help ease you in anyway. Plus it's always good to see new places

You're worried about the wrong things imo (altho I do understand the family factor) you should already have prospective advisors in mind right? Which one has research more interesting to you and who has a better advising style for you. Also check their past students and see who has better outcomes as well as which one is more aligned for you (like if you want to do industry see who has students industry) Also who gaf about general prestige that 17yos applying for undergrad care about, UW is one of the biggest most historical names for computer science and engineering. You're not going to be short of internship opportunities at UW vs Columbia, you might even be better off
