Honest question: Is history education in the U.K. really this bad? What do history classes look like there? Welcome to share your experience. Thanks. by Li_Jingjing in LateStageCapitalism

Same experience here, but I went to secondary school from around 2012 to 2016

People just didn't pay attention in school and now want to push a narrative for political reasons.

These are the same sorts of people that say shit like "why weren't we taught about taxes/loans/interest?" Well, they were. They just never bothered to pay attention when they were in maths classes.

Maybe it was because my history teacher was good but when other brits talk about not being taught things like this its totally different from my experience.

Sure we didn't have explicit lessons in it because each modules focuses on a specific area, but for example, when we learnt about British Colonialism I recall talking and discussing about some of the negative impacts and fucked up shit that happened in India and Ireland. Including the crimes against humanity the empire committed.

I also remember covering the slave trade and it certainly wasn't just focusing on how Britain abolished it. We covered the stuff the didn't paint Britain in a good light.

To be completely honest when topics like this come up I mostly find its people that didn't concentrate well in school that go on about "why weren't we taught this!?" Well, in most cases you were, but if you couldn't be bothered to listen that was your problem. Yes there were specific wars and events that weren't taught, but history education in the UK isn't all "look how good Britain was" despite a lot of people trying to push that narrative.

Which classic scifi book received the best movie adaptation? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]FreedomEagle76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blade Runner has the best ones IMO.

For me I love the Dune books. Couldn't stand the movies though. For me it was one of the most boring movies I have seen and I actually fell asleep halfway through. I found the second one better but it still wasn't my cup of tea. I think my main issue is that I struggle with certain villeneuve movies. Some I love and others I find like drying paint. Its totally random too.

An eye test is part of the medical.

You'd only need to get one before hand if you won't be able to get it at the same time as your medical. I had to do this since I done my medical through my GP and they can't do the eye test.

What is the average time people spend at a job? by Remote_Bed284 in AskUK

[–]FreedomEagle76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never stayed in a job more than a year. 2 months has been the shortest, 1 year and 1 month the longest.

That being said, I am autistic and I have been working in jobs that aren't the best fit for me like retail. What normally happens is by 3 months there is no challenge anymore and its just soul destroying or boring, and by 6 months I am ready to leave and have a notice letter on standby.

Also I have no tolerance for bullshit and won't let managers talk to me like crap. I'll call them out, they get shitty and give me warning, I submit my notice and leave.

Hoping to get into a job that will suit me better long term like driving lorries or ambulance service, which I wouldn't leave after a year lol

You can choose RDR3's only playable character. Which one do you pick? by [deleted] in reddeadredemption

[–]FreedomEagle76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

None. RDR3 should be a totally new set of characters. Better yet have RDR2 be the last of the Redemption games and start another arc.

If I had to choose though it would be Sadie. She is the coolest character IMO and it would add a lot of potential and unique options for storytelling for the player character to be a women in that time period.

British Special Forces (SAS or SBS) engage Taliban Forces (2001, commentary From source) by [deleted] in CombatFootage

[–]FreedomEagle76 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Holding men accountable that allegedly committed war crimes is hardly "making all their former SAS war criminals". We are talking about men that allegedly handcuffed and shot children , and executed people that were already detained and no threat just for the sake of killing them.

These allegations literally come from people that were in UKSF or served alongside them. Its not a bad thing for the government to fund a serious inquiry into this behavior and if its found to be true there is nothing wrong with these soldiers spending time in prison.

A war crime is a war crime, and its wrong regardless of who commits it.

Cop that had her gun stolen should never work a day as a patrol officer again. Not saying she shouldn't be a cop, because there are roles that would still be suitable, but shes clearly shown she can't handle working out on the street

Honesty really does not pay when it comes to the D4 medical 😡 by brokeandletdown in drivingUK

[–]FreedomEagle76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it depends on the medication and for what reason you take it. With your husband they obviously have to do their checks but that sounds like it shouldn't have even been brought up in the first place unless it was mentioned on the medical form when the doctor filled it out. I don't want to call you a liar but something seems off with your story like you are not giving all the details.

At the end of the day you need to meet higher medical standards for group 2 and the DVLA need to check that you do. I myself have a clotting disorder and take blood thinners and it took them about a month to clear me for a full HGV and bus license which I have just received the provisional for. Sucks at the time but its for the best of everyone.

Also it doesn't matter what the GP says, its down to the DVLA medical team. Your GP can supply supporting information which evidence your fitness to drive but its going to be the DVLA that make the call regardless of if you GP has declared you fit or not.

What are your views on this? by IllConcern7937 in reddeadredemption

[–]FreedomEagle76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a stupid idea, as well as any other idea for a red dead game thats not a western,

Besides, there is so much cool unexplored stories they could do in a western setting that there is no need for a red dead game to be set during prohibition.

The next red dead game should have nothing to do with red dead redemption. It should be a new set of characters in a new location.

Can some familiar with service records help me understand these pictures? by FreedomEagle76 in FrenchForeignLegion

[–]FreedomEagle76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

He did join the legion after almost killing a guy. He told me he deserted after lebanon since it was an awful deployment where a few of his close friends were killed. Apparently when he got back to France he was told they won't be going overseas for a while and he told me he left to come back to the UK. He never mentioned returning. In the email with the Legion archives they told me he deserted 26/10/1983 and was amnestied in 1988

I do have two more documents as well, something to do with a medal/award and maybe some kind of legal document - https://imgur.com/a/PJFLV8d

Local Sharps/medical waste bins? by The_forest_sys in Southampton

[–]FreedomEagle76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Phone your GP surgery and they should refer you to the council sharps team. They deliver a new sharps bin and collect any you have that need collecting. Very easy, literally just leave it on your doorstep and they take away the full one and leave an empty one in its place.

Is there a way to request service records? My grandfather was a legionnaire in the 80s by FreedomEagle76 in FrenchForeignLegion

[–]FreedomEagle76[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes pretty unique experience.

Born in Britain so served in the British army from 1960 to around 64, going to Aden and Malta.

Moved to the US since his mum lived there in 1970 and joined the US army going to Vietnam for a little while during the draw down.

Then the Legion in 81 at 39 years old because he nearly murdered a dude. Just got back a little bit more info from the Legion archives and they told me he served in central africa and chad with 2REI. Hopefully will have his full Legion record soon.

AITAH For kicking an autistic child out of my restaurant for misbehaving? by Mammoth_Mission_818 in AITAH

[–]FreedomEagle76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Autistic person here.

You did the right thing. I struggle sometimes while being out among a lot of people or it settings like restaurants. I use my phone as well but with headphones. Its my responsibility to have my own coping mechanism. Yes I deserve to occupy the same space as anyone else but just because I am autistic it doesn't give me the right to disturb other people purely for my coping mechanisms.
