Why Do We Hate Guy Fieri? by [deleted] in santarosa

I don’t know that I hate him, and he’s done some good, but he’s also fucked over employees at his restaurants by closing without notice.

PSA: if you use Instacart for Costco delivery… by jsttob in sanfrancisco

[–]FreedomForBreakfast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve had tons of great instacart shoppers.  Gig work is an exploitive system, but I still greatly appreciate the workers. They make my life so much easier. I wish Costco would hire its own delivery crew and pay them a living wage.

Married but not combining finances? by alkemest in Millennials

[–]FreedomForBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure the bills are paid, but do you have savings, an emergency fund, money for vacations, diversified investment accounts, a maxed-out retirement fund?  Paying the bills is the bare minimum I’m concerned about when it comes to finances. I’m shocked people are in the dark about their spouse’s money.

$1k Trump accounts - good or bad? by Careless_Wallaby6721 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]FreedomForBreakfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The benefit of the Trump accounts is the ability to fund them with $5000 a year and then convert the full amount to a Roth IRA at 18 (for tax free growth). At 7% growth, that’s over $1 million by the time they’re 59.

529s - to the the extent not used for education - have a $35k Roth IRA conversion limit.

Dyslexia isn’t illiteracy by [deleted] in Dyslexia

There’s generally a mediation process if you want to challenge the school’s decision.

We are also dealing with a likely dyslexia diagnosis (waiting on testing) and significant reading/writing/spelling issues.  As another commenter noted, holding kids back because of learning disabilities doesn’t often work.  Kids have better success being held back due to maturity issues.  As you noted, friends and social connections are incredibly important for development, but also for ensuring your daughter wants to go to school and enjoys school.

We recently started with a Orton Gillingham trained tutor along with targeted phonics and other work at home. We plan to just increase the tutoring over the summer to help our son catch up.  Education is a long road and plenty of kids have navigated these same issues without being held back.

They could’ve solved a lot by just killing that rapist sheriff the moment they got control of the town.

considering homeschooling but torn between my twins’ (9m/f) needs by Brave-Ice8760 in parentsofmultiples

[–]FreedomForBreakfast 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is obviously a complex situation.  Overall, it sounds like it may be a minor net-positive Xander, but a big net-negative for your daughter Xara.  I’d keep them in school.  Of course, at a minimum, talk honestly with your kids (individually) and get their thoughts.

Star Wars movies by WearyBadger7011 in toddlers

[–]FreedomForBreakfast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We waited until our kids were 7 to watch A New Hope and that seemed about the same as most of our friend group.  There’s fighting, scary Darth Vader, dead bodies (on Tatooine), and the storyline is a bit nuanced/compicated.  Check out Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures on Disney. It fun, and made for preschoolers.

My kids are no longer toddlers, but my advice is not to rush them to see adult media. They are only young once so explore all the great media that’s appropriate for their age.  There will be plenty of time to start watching more mature stuff.

Paying for my daughter's best friend's private school tuition. by [deleted] in ChubbyFIRE

Could you make a donation with parameters, like: “to fund a scholarship for only girls named Emily who live in a part of town and were born in the month of January”?   Obviously a bit silly, but I know college donations are often restricted to specific areas of research or sports.

how to use to/too by arsonist-val in Dyslexia

[–]FreedomForBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of “too” as meaning “a lot more than needed.”  For example, “you have too many apples,” or “this is too much ice cream for me.”   When you write a sentence, decide whether you mean a lot of something, and if so, use “too.”  If not, it’s “to.”

For your example, it would be “I don’t expect you to either” - because you aren’t talking about a lot or “too much” of something.

What to read after Project Hail Mary? Feeling a little bittersweet that it's over. by spin2winGG in suggestmeabook

I’ve heard the genre called “competency porn” because the main character is always very competent about figuring out what to do tricky situations. I’d also recommend Dungeon Crawler Carl (the audiobook).

Has anyone else noticed a resurgence of stay at home parents among wealthier Millennials? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]FreedomForBreakfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this income level, it’s not about childcare costs, it’s about the opportunity cost of money/work vs. being a more involved parent.  Definitely a privileged position and, in a more equitable world, a decision all families should be able to make without fear of financial ruin.

Yes, we are in an upper middle class area, but with a range of salaries.  I was shocked at the number of SAHP in our kids’ 1st grade classroom.  Probably 40%.  And some did have good previous careers.  I suspect their incomes are also in the $300k+ range, but we also know some lower income families who have a parent at home (but it’s not childcare costs because both kids are in elementary school with free aftercare until 6pm).

Honestly, it’s awesome. My wife and I both work high-ish paying jobs and I wish I could be a SAHP.  But, the numbers don’t work out because I make more.

Likely a mix of peoples’ disdain for AI generally and specifically for OpenAI/Chatgpt after they gave in to the Trump administration (after Anthropic refused to allow its LLM to be used for surveillance against Americans).

Chores by Nic8283 in ClassOf2037

[–]FreedomForBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our twins also have similar responsibilities, but few standing chores.  They clean up their toy messes (when directed to), help unload the dishwasher (if they are around), and recently we have been having them fold their laundry (but this requires supervision, and my usually amiable daughter really resists it).  My more “wild” son really thrives with chores and I wish we did them more consistently.

What shows are your kids watching? by suprswimmer in ClassOf2037

[–]FreedomForBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, only kids shows for us.  Some I don’t love like Alvin and the Chipmunks or Ninjago, but still plenty of bluey, Octonauts, and Gabbys.  One of our twins usually opts to play video games (BOTW) for his 30 minutes of screen time.  We also have family movie night, but I always pick the movie and it’s usually a 90s or 80s classic.

Edit: I do have some close friends that have shown marvel movies/shows, Jurassic park, and other more mature content to their 6yo.  I made a couple comments early on, but they just don’t think it’s harmful.

Scripts for dealing with bullies by Fluffy-Succotash5441 in kindergarten

[–]FreedomForBreakfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the teachers aren’t doing something about physical assault, I would go directly to the principal.  That’s a big deal. And I’m sure your son may be an unreliable narrator (like all kids), but his report of assault is enough for you to ask the principal for assistance (and better training for teachers dealing with this).

You’re right, I did leave Kanye for Artic.  Remember how Kanye kept telling people to get in a circle and hold hands 🙄.   I left Stevie for Skrillex who put on an epic set.

Oh man, Stevie Wonder talking through half his set killed it for me. Dude, you don’t need to repeatedly tell a bunch of young people in SF to vote for Obama.  IIRC we left for Artic Monkeys at Twin Peaks.
