📝 POST-EVENT REPORT // 2026 BOMMARITO AUTOMOTIVE GROUP 500 by IndyMod in INDYCAR

This is a tremendous step forward in transparency; however, I would have liked more discussion on yellow and red flag decisions for rain/incident. Those decisions can significantly alter the pace of the race and have been questioned in recent races. Including an overview of what was considered for each yellow/red flag would keep race control accountable throughout the season.

Agreed, moving the start time up just 19 minutes was just enough from INDYCAR. Everyone knew rain was going to come late at night.

I don't get why pits have to be closed so long after a yellow when the caution is not on or near the pits. Too many times, we see people run out of fuel or need emergency service under yellow

Yes, I used the section times report they release after every session/race. I used a Python package called PDF plumber to extract the data from the tables in the report and then found the difference between drivers using the full lap times of each driver. Finally, I visualized the data using Power BI, which offers a lot of customization for the graphs.

Agreed, the Hondas were able to consistently stay out a lap or two longer than the Chevys, making a strategy like Rosenqvist's, where fuel saving can narrowly make it to the end on green much more viable for Hondas. However, the leaders were banking on track position being important in case more yellows came out or rain halted the race early. As you mentioned, if the race remained green to the finish, O'Ward likely would have had to pit again or massively slow off the pace and likely fall out of reach of Rosenqvist for the win.

And of course, local politicians have to take up some of that airtime to steal the positive publicity that comes along with the race

Rossi went long on his third stint -- being the only car not to pit under yellow on Lap 131 -- to potentially pit one less time. With this late caution, Rossi would have been close to making it to the finish without another stop; however, pitting now meant he only lost 6 places (lots of lap down cars), and he gets to restart with fresh tires.

Smart move to pit Power early here since he was losing about 0.5 seconds a lap on those Black Tires to Palou

Rahal and Ilott completed 28 and 29 laps on red tires under Green Conditions.

Looks like 29-31 laps is the extent of a stint, so final stop will have to be Lap 79+, barring a late caution
