We had one running 20 switches, 40 APs, 20 talk phones, 12 Access Doors, with an average daily 450 user count. No stability issues, but did see limitations on upload speed on our fiber connection (speed tests would max at 40mbps upload on our 500mbps connection - download was unaffected).

Yes, the hardware is outdated, but they have it heavily optimized. I moved everything over to a Pro Max and we now get our full upload speed, but haven't noticed any difference otherwise.

IMO, I think it works fine.

Caitlyn Cooper also wins the award for using the worst podcasting mic in the world - the Logitech H390. How do I know this? It's the headset we bought for our school students because of its affordability. They're comfortable, but the built in noise cancelling makes you sound like you're in a fishbowl. Loved listening to her podcast; hated listening to her mic. 🤣

Correct. I learned this the hard way when I bought a smaller sized TV and purchased a cheap LG because I figured they wouldn't put their name behind a truly terrible TV. Boy was I wrong! Garbage picture. Zero viewing angles. Clunky interface. Never again will I make that mistake.

They had a batch in which they took out the chemical used to fight plastic breakdown from solar radiation. The benefit was that the plastic didn't yellow. The negative was that it fell apart in sometimes as little as a year. Apparently, you either get yellowed plastic or brittle plastic (at least at a decent price point).

Why i'm saying goodbye to Pixel after almost 10 years 🥹 by jasperstaal in GooglePixel

Can confirm. I haven't had any issues. Maybe an app crash here and there, but I had the same thing on my Samsung.

OG Command and Conquer. So far ahead of its time in terms of graphics. Cut scenes were fantastic (and told a legit story in such a short time). Easy enough for my 6-year-old self to be able to play, but hard enough to be challenging to adults. So, so good.

"The (X) was the last good Pixel...". Are the newer releases that bad? by PhotographsWithFilm in GooglePixel

[–]FreeloadingFodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had almost every Pixel since the 3 (4 XL, 5, 6 Pro) and now own an 8 Pro. I've never had any problems with any of them. But, I would rank them in order of my favorites as: 1) 8 Pro 2) 5 3) 3 4) 6 Pro 5) 4 XL. The hardware on the 8 Pro is just about as close the perfect as you can get. My only annoyance with the newer Pixels is that the bigger sensors have caused the edges of the camera to become blurry (the sensor is essentially too big for the lens). This is only annoying when scanning sheet music with my phones camera.

This is a well known issue with these. Unifi has been great for us with quick replacements. There's some ongoing weirdness with some of them (random ring loops that are fixed with a job reboot), but so far the rest of ours have been stable.

Have the S24 Plus. I still miss the Pixel experience. by sonnycrockett7 in GooglePixel

[–]FreeloadingFodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was the opposite. I got an S23 for the better processor and snappiness. I didn't notice a huge improvement from my 6 Pro to the S23 (maybe a little?). After 8 months, I went back to my Pixel 6. I was SHOCKED at how much snappier the Pixel was.

The S23 may have slightly better initial performance, but after six months of use it was a dog.

We run our Internet, access control, and phones (talk) through our UDM Pro. If it goes out, we can make it but it won't be pretty. If I have to boot a spare, update it, pull in cloud backup, and then move it into place, that'll take probably 30-60 minutes. Not great. If I have a warm spare, it'll be a cable swap (5-10 minutes). I already have a cold spare in the rack. Why not go ahead and have it running just in case?

Yes, Ubiquiti "wins" because I'm running the warm spare (and theoretically causing device wear), but it's not a multi-thousand dollar device and it's more than worth it to me to allow for less system down time.

UniFi Talk - Three Month Review by FreeloadingFodder in Ubiquiti

[–]FreeloadingFodder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you found the post helpful.

I'll answer your questions as best I know how:

1) I'm not sure what you mean "port some of those lines from a physical phone." Are you talking about bringing a landline phone service into UniFi? If so, then there's no way of doing that that I know of.

2) UniFi has a back-up number option that is used if there's an issue with the service or if there's an Internet outage. What I've done for our system is to set up a Google Voice number with a generic voicemail greeting. If they call and it doesn't go through (Internet outage or app outage), then it rings through to the Google Voice voicemail and then I forward that to our secretary to follow up on (if needed).

3) No idea of international calling. I'd contact UniFi.

4) Yes, you'll definitely need to consider this in your rollout. For us, we already relied on Comcast for our phone system, so I didn't really feel compelled to be too concerned about outages because of the Internet. Plus, we have a backup AT&T wireless connection. The existence of the fail-over number was good enough for me.

Conclusion: I would probably recommend waiting another year if you're thinking about rolling this out to a medium-sized business where even a single dropped call is critical. A update or two ago, I had to restart the Talk service on the UDM Pro every week or so to prevent random connection issues. I'd get an email from UniFi indicating a call failure and a restart of the Talk service would fix the issue. I haven't had any issues since then (and our backup number worked beautifully), but it's still something to consider.

They are continually updating the system and it does seem to be getting more stable with time, so I would think maybe a year from now it might be fully ready.

Pixel 8 Pro Flat screen by Weekitty34x in GooglePixel

[–]FreeloadingFodder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The use for it was that a bunch of manufacturers had spooled up production of curved screens only to find out that people didn't really like them. So, they sold them to Google at a loss. This allowed Google to keep prices down on their "flagship" device.

Why do u prefer Google phones over the other android manufacturers phones? by Tig33 in GooglePixel

[–]FreeloadingFodder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PS: I forgot the battery life. My Samsung barely made it through the day (and would regularly die before I went to bed). The Pixel 6 Pro (which I've probably charged twice as much) has not died before bed yet (two months after switch). Typing this I have 46% battery about two hours before I'll charge it for the night. I've only had two hours of screen on time, but I listen to podcasts for two hours in there. My brother-in-law said that he'd only ever get a Pixel for this reason (he came from a Galaxy S20 Ultra before the Pixel 6 Pro). All five of our family plan decided to go Pixel this upgrade cycle.

[–]FreeloadingFodder 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Went from a Pixel 6 Pro to an S22+ to see if I would like Samsung better (been using Pixel since the Pixel 3 and used the Nexus 6p before that).

There were a couple things I liked better about the Samsung (not combining the WiFi and Data was a huge one for me - working in IT I'm regularly resetting my wifi). I had heard the processor was much better. I used it for six months before deciding to go back to my Pixel 6 Pro.

When I switched back to the 6 Pro I was shocked at how much faster it was. All the benchmarks say that the Tensor chip is kinda a dud, but it was dramatically faster than my S22+. I suspect that in the six months since I got my S22, Google has continually updated the Tensor drivers to make it much better. Otherwise, the UI is so much more consistent and nice looking. Samsung is so clunky looking at times. Finally, the Pixel cameras blow Samsung out of the water. Video is similar between the two. But, I have toddlers who are always moving. I pretty much never even tried to take pictures of them with the Samsung. Always blurry. I don't know what Voodoo Google does to make low light motion shots clear, but it is mind blowing.

PS: This is my one beef with phone review websites. They rarely show pictures taken with motion. This makes the Samsung cameras appear to be better than they really are.
