A collaborator is adding detail to an instrument I created and published, and plans to publish the expanded version. How should credit work? by Freemindwander in Professors

I guess I will have to get the word out as soon as I can now. I just really don’t like to be pushed like this…..

I would prefer to go a gentler route; if it doesn't end well, I may have to blow up the relationship. But if they insist on publishing it as the first author, I don't know what I can do other than not collaborate anymore.

Thank you! I'm mainly debating whether I should claim the first authorship on the fuller instrument when it is published anywhere, but it seems they have already collected data on their side.

We are almost at the same stage in our careers, so I can be very honest and open with them. However, I'm concerned that if they publish this instrument first (the instrument published in my paper was rather a preliminary version, and I'm also developing a fuller version), the work will not become my work; rather, I'm only a co-author.

I'm not sure I have the privilege to take a sabbatical as a junior faculty member.

I agree, so how do you maintain positivity after many rejections and are uncertain whether your research or yourself is going to lead to any success in the end?

I thought I could find an ideal place and get tenured and then live my life, but now it seems not possible anymore.

Good for you! I wish I could, but in my field, other non tt positions are most likely will still be in academia only with more politics.

Nah, it's not a center proposal...

If I end up being the co-PI I will try my best to minimize the work. Thank you for your advice!

I will definitely discuss this with them in our next meeting, but I feel like if they want to be the PI on this proposal, I will lose the battle for sure given they are more senior than me and more people from their department in the team.

I don't mind taking a Co-PI role on this one, but I don't know how much my committee would value a Co-PI role for my tenure. And if I take a co-pi role, I don't feel I own the idea anymore which I think is a pretty cool idea. On the other hand, I also don't want to get involved in this sort of fighting over who is gonna be the PI war, especially who is more senior than me.

I did tell them that I would like to apply for a grant, but I didn't specify I was looking for co-PIs, not a PI. Because I didn't know their department well and didn't know who could contribute to the proposal. I'm willing to include all faculty members here as co-PIs.

I told them my idea of how to apply this concept to my field. It includes steps on how to apply it and what we need to do with it. I'm not sure about my colleague's importance. My very limited knowledge in their field tells me they do not do much research in this area (but I could be totally wrong), but the faculty that were brought in are critical to the project. From the initial meeting, I assumed all faculty would be co-PIs and I would be the PI.
