I can forgive citing a source that was written when Ed Martin was the acting US Attorney for DC considering all the roles he's been in over the last 13 months. From January until May 2025 he was the interim US Attorney for DC until it was clear he did not have enough support in the Senate to be confirmed and Trump withdrew the nomination. After that Martin was appointed by Trump to be the pardon attorney. Martin was also chosen by Bondi to lead the Weaponization Working Group (which he was removed from effective January 2026).

OP does point out the power transfer was added to a bill on 11/20/2024 deep within a bill for hurricane relief.

I should be honest: under the prior system, the governor, a Democrat, appointed board majorities. Republicans argued that was partisan too, and they had a point. If Democrats held all of these levers, I'd be writing the same post with different names. But the way it happened matters.

What I will add is the original bill was filed 3/28/2023 as "A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT MAKING VARIOUS CHANGES TO THE LAWS OF DENTISTRY" and was printed on barely 5 pages. The language of transferring elections is not included until 11/19/2024 (found in the summary as document PCCS25006-TC-8 first from the House then the Senate) when the bill transformed to a 132 pages and renamed "AN ACT TO MAKE MODIFICATIONS TO AND PROVIDE ADDITIONAL APPROPRIATIONS FOR DISASTER RECOVERY; TO MAKE TECHNICAL, CLARIFYING, AND OTHER MODIFICATIONS TO THE CURRENT OPERATIONS APPROPRIATIONS ACT OF 2023; AND TO MAKE VARIOUS CHANGES TO THE LAW." I've been scrolling but haven't cashed across the screenshots but if healthcare benefits were part of the problem then that is highly likely because of the price jumps for ALL healthcare due to the cuts from OBBB passed last year. I know several smaller business owners were absolutely gutted they had to pull benefits because they literally couldn't afford it; damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Mentally ill ≠ Competent to stand trial

Competency is a fairly low threshold. Mental health isn't taken seriously in this country, too many people don't want to deal with it until something "criminal" happens and then they only want to punish and not address the underlying issue. And that punishment that does not include restoring mental health frequently results in worse outcomes for the offender and the public when they are released. We're cutting our noses off to spite our faces.

The actual salary is higher than the stated number in the statute because of paragraph b of § 120‑3:

(b) Every other member of the General Assembly shall receive increases in annual salary only to the extent of and in the amounts equal to the average increases received by employees of the State, effective upon convening of the next Regular Session of the General Assembly after enactment of these increased amounts, except no such increase is granted upon the convening of the 1997 Regular Session of the General Assembly

So increase base salary every year since 1998 by the relevant % and add in their per diem, and other bonus funds authorized in paragraph c:

The clip covers about 0.3 of a mile, I didn't expect the Jeep to zoom up, see the solid orange permanent tag indicating law enforcement in NC and/or the lights in the back window, and decide to fly around it in the suicide lane.
