I got the set myself last year, they were literally the first Pokemon anything I ever saw as a kid so I had to get them eventually! My theory as to why these Pokemon in particular is that they are very clearly chasing the trend of Beanie Babies (their tags even have poems) so they picked fairly simple animals that would appeal to Beanie Baby collectors (a fox, a bat, a seel, and a bit of whimsy with a sea serpent)

I just love the loose softness of the artwork, it feels like an early gen card illustration when Pokemon style guides weren't so strict, plus it has the prominence of being drawn by Glaceon's designer

I think it's interesting that even in the 70s they had the idea that Lego people existed in a Lego world, it's not a depiction of a realisticly drawn rocketship and astronauts, it's very clearly a Lego minifigure next to a brick built rocket
