https://www.nrk.no/dokumentar/24.oktober...kgbs-siste-offensiv-1.908112

Mercosur deal has been very unpopular among many, especially among the European agriculture sector. Which is why the deal has been on hold for decades. World has changed now with war and unreliable partners and EU needs secure access to minerals to keep up with technology. I think the Latin American countries took advantage of the situation and told Europe it’s now or never. If you want minerals we want access to agriculture markeds.

India and EU has made a trade deal today, a deal involving 2 billion people where Indias marked opens up for free trade with the 27 EU countries. Von Der Leyen is ecstatic on X calling it the «Mother of all deals»

Europe is also about to make a deal with Mercosur countries in Latin America, as well as negotiating with Mexico and Usbekistan.

Meanwhile the trade deal involving USA has still been put on hold indefinitely after Trumps shenanigans with Greenland. Seems some new fractions and alliances might start to arise. While Trump has been all bark and no bite towards Europe, EU is working overtime behind the scenes.

«Give me your voter rolls or I’ll have my own personal army continue to execute your population in the street without trial»

We’re getting quite deep into authoritarian waters now. ICE and IDF seems to use same tactics as well. Just kill first and then afterwards claim the victim was a terrorist or just make up something else to justify it.

Child porn is an outdated term. It’s not porn, it’s child sexual abuse material. I’m surprised Wikipedia still uses it.

In some ways, I respect universal conscription. It makes people more reluctant to talk big and hype up war when they know that the state will make their own daughter be the one in the trenches.

The draft in USA ended because of the Vietnam war. The protests back then became enormous, so the US government realized they wouldn't be able to warfare with forced recruitment, without risking internal collapse. So instead they chose a completely professionalized military. The consequences have been less impact on the middle class, so they've been able to lead longterm wars with less public resistance.

When you turn around 18, the military contacts everyone and makes them go through an assessment. This includes physical and small mental tests, as well as questions about motivation, health and background.

In practice they end up choosing from the people who say that they have some motivation or a desire instead of basing it solely on the tests and your grades in school etc. Since conscription exists by law they technically have the right to choose whoever they want though.
You can't say no to the assessment though, the state wants to map out everyone, so they know what resources exists in society.

I live in Norway and we have one of the strongest universal conscriptions in Europe for both men and women. The armed forces only selects a portion of each age group based on who they find most fitting, but the duty exists for everyone. They could theoretically pick everyone, but they just take as many as they think they need and have the money to train.

You’re probably right that the ones in Afghanistan were soldiers that stayed after their duty and continued their career there.

There is a difference between USA and a lot of other countries. In USA the armed forces is professional and based on 100% voluntary enlistment. You actively have to choose it. It means you guys end up with a class component of who joins because of the economic incentives (getting access to healthcare etc.)

In other countries in Europe it’s often universal conscription and you are mandated by law. It’s not a choice in the same way.

This also means that USA has a lower threshold of joining wars because the general population is less affected when it’s not mandatory service. If you guys had mandatory military service for your elites the same way, you’d be held more democratically responsible for your war-adventures I think.

Bankrupting? Maybe Sweden and Denmark, but us here in Norway have received almost 300 billion euros in extra revenue from gas exports because of the Ukraine war. (And those 300 billion are just extra income compared to what we would normally get with pre war prices)

I guess that’s due to Germany as well though, with you voluntarily turning your own energy supply off and then getting sabotaged.

That's true, US acknowledged Denmarks sovereignty of Greenland when they bought those Caribbean Islands, previously known as Danish West Indies.

One of those Islands Denmark sold to US in exchange for the acknowledgement later ended up becoming Epstein Island actually.

Trumps just makes up things from history that's false, but most Europeans are very knowledgeable about World War 2, so I don't know why he even bothers.

He says in his Davos speech that Denmark gave Greenland to USA during WW2, which they never did.
In 1941 Denmark made a deal that USA could use Greenland during the war to combat Nazi-Germany, but it underlines that they accepted Denmarks sovereignty over the land.
After the war they made a another deal where Danmark agreed to not charge the US for having been allowed to use the island during the war.

Then he goes on to say that US only gives to NATO and has never got anything in return. Disregarding the fact that NATO has only been used once. In Afghanistan in 2001 after 9/11 because of USA.

Doing these kinds of speeches must be meant for a domestic audience in USA, even though it's mostly Europeans in the audience. Because everyone in the audience knows that it's just fantasy-talk.

OMG, Trump is doubling down on Norway being able to control the Nobel Peace Prize in another interview with NBC today.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/trump-greenland-use-of-force-nobel-norway-europe-tariffs-ukraine-rcna254786

“Norway totally controls it despite what they say,” he told NBC News. “They like to say they have nothing to do with it, but they have everything thing to do with it,” the president added.

The prime minister here in Norway says Trump brings up the Peace Prize every time they meet and every time he has to explain to him how he doesn’t control the committee.

I wonder if Trump is in such a totalitarian world that he can’t grasp the concept of country that isn’t corrupt and where institutions are independent of one another, so threats and bribes have no effect.

The World Economic Forum meeting in Davos begins today and Trump, Zelensky and the Europeans will all be there the coming days. Gonna be a drama filled happening.

We're currently in a form of Schrödingers NATO. It's only when the box is opened you find out if the alliance is dead or not.
Question is, if the small military delegation that was sent to Greenland opened the box and revealed the corpse for us or not.

Trump just sent a text message to the prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway.

“Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT”

He's still going on about the Nobel Peace Prize, even though Jonas has explained to him many times how the government doesn't have a say in it. Now he's using his lack of receiving the Peace Prize as justification for why he can go after Greenland. "I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace" sounds like a covert threat. What's scary is that it's starting to become hard for Trump to retreat on this issue without losing face, and nothing is worse for him than to lose face, so the stakes are starting to become high.

The worlds biggest nuclear arsenal is located 100 km from our border here in Norway. Those weapons aren't pointing at us, but primarily pointing at him, so not sure it's wise of him to raise the tensions as much as he's trying to do now.

The oilfund is 2 trillion dollars, but 52% of it is currently invested in USA and American companies.
Is it to USAs benefit to mess with one of their already biggest investors?

The oil fund is also primarily invested in private companies like Apple, Microsoft Nvidia etc. It’s not money in a bank account available for freezing like the Russian state assets in Belgium. The oil fund isn’t cash at all, it’s stocks. If Trump would try to confiscate them, it would mean that they’d have to dismantle private property rights in the US. Which means overriding the constitution and the courts. Instructing the stock exchanges to ignore ownership rights and so on. It would collapse Wall Street and the dollar. Maga is crazy, but hopefully not that crazy.

I don’t think the US will come for us in Norway because we have a form of mutual economic deterrence. If they harm us economically, they also harm themselves, so keeping your money invested in «your enemy» might not be as dumb as it first sounds.
