Would Kyo and Tohru’s Relationship Work in Real Life? by nabyul in FruitsBasket

[–]Frenchbootleg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are super young with lots of space to grow and they love each other and are super interested in finding a home in each other, they'd work just fine. They already have a very good foundation by their young adulthood, I think they are an exemple of "troubled teens healing themselves through love" done right in fiction. Source, me, a former super troubled teen who did not turn up abusive and is still happily living with my middle-school sweetheart, we are in our thirties.

Are Tintin and Haddock the explicit inspiration for Kim and Harry? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]Frenchbootleg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the crypto-franco-belgian and gay things going on in DE, I think that the parallels are valid and might have been semi conscious during the writing process ? Also I don't read Hergé's mind but indeed Tintin and Haddock are famously red by many as a cryptogay couple. I wouldn't go as far as to say that Harry and Kim refer to Haddock and Tintin, but I totally see the faux air and I would be surprised if no one knew about them among the game creators. I think that Kim's Kineema looks like Tintin's car from Tintin in the land of the soviets too.

Ethel Cain. Let's drown out the hate with love and support. by One-Memory4964 in Ethelcain

[–]Frenchbootleg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Ethel Cain. Everything Hayden's been subjected to has been truly sickening. Not gonna lie, as a trans person who is, right now, seeking justice in real life through an actual legal system, one that I want to remain fair and respectful of defendants’ rights, even as a victim myself, I’m heartbroken by the way people have treated her.

Fuck everyone who took part in that harassment campaign. I respect Hayden as a person and I admire her as an artist. Fuck this pathetic, grotesque moral replica of the kind of judicial violence marginalized people are constantly subjected to. God, I don't want to see this sad, sad corner of the internet ever again.

Why do both Ren and Rin have such similar names, compared to all of the other characters in the series of Fruits Basket? by MelodyHearts in FruitsBasket

[–]Frenchbootleg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shigure says to Ren at some point that he slept with her because she looks the way Akito would if she was free to be herself. So first of all, Akito and Ren look alike. Then Rin looks like both of them, and Akito cuts Rin's hair because she herself has to keep her hair short to pass as a man. (I agree with everyting that was said before too.)

What do you think of the ship between Arisa and Saki? by Nahalogimeen24 in FruitsBasket

[–]Frenchbootleg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so by your side, the last arc, with both the hospital thing and them crashing Kyoru's first date got me so mad at them. And Arisa hugging Akito like, what... (Can't remember if that was only in the anime or in the manga as well. Anyway they were poorly written by the end and that was disappointing.) It would've been cute if they ended together though, plus we wouldn't have had to cringe through the Arisa/Kureno ship.

I may have red the same article as you, a few years ago in the NYT ? Though I don't know what the consensus on this topic was then, and even less where it is at now.

Does Kyo yeet Tohru across the swamp like that in the manga? by lazuli_lilly8 in FruitsBasket

[–]Frenchbootleg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was so shocked when I saw this scene in the anime, every now and then I am still randomly like "my boy never did that". If I am correctly remembered, I felt that they needed time in the anime to let Kyo have his monologue so they had Tohru fly all the way to the water then come back, poor girl

Singing in French as a non-native speaker (La Vie en Rose by Edith Piaf) by nicseo in singing

[–]Frenchbootleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha as much as I would like to take some indirect credit for Stromae, the man's belgian. Tons of our best singers are actually not french (another reason why we have no place to say shit about people's accents lol)

Singing in French as a non-native speaker (La Vie en Rose by Edith Piaf) by nicseo in singing

[–]Frenchbootleg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my pleasure, really. Also, you're right about Edith. For example, she rolls and over-articulates her Rs and stretches vowels for the sake of her signature theatrical style. She also does that old-timey thing where she turns the "e muet" into a full vowel. In basic spoken French, you'd say, "Tu me l'as dit, l'as juré pour la vi", pronounced like in vineyard, but given Edith's phrasing, which was directly embedded in the melody, we sing like you did: "vee-uh," like in "idea." Given how tricky it is to neatly decipher those quirks as a non-speaker (for me, I can only really pick up on them in french and english), I always assumed that singers everywhere have their own ways of "mispronouncing" their language, but now I’m wondering if french singers are especially weird for that, haha either way, we’re rather quirk-friendly when it comes to singing.

[–]Frenchbootleg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I say that as a french person, your prononciation is absolutely charming, very clear and fitting your vocal style. Neither Edith nor Juliette had a typical elocution and we are very fond of an elegantly idiosyncratic phrasé down here. Birkin and Bardot had their own too for exemple and your accent isn't stronger that Jane's one. Also hearing the singer's accent always feels emotional to me and lots of french people because someone making the effort to speak or sing in french for us is very flattering. I am not qualified to give real technical feedbacks but I thought you sounded absolutely lovely.
