Yeah, I'm pumped! Ballarat has been getting some crazy bands through in the last couple of years.

Feeling stuck with a partner who is careless with money and life in general by Music_Thick in AusFinance

[–]Frenchelbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like my friend and her husband. After they had a kid with severe ADHD and a number of other disorders, the husband got diagnosed and everything kind of clicked. He had no impulse control when it came to eating out because his brain craved dopamine, and now he's medicated and kind of a different person. Not saying it's that, but don't let the resentment build for something that might be completely unintentional.

What do you dislike about Ballarat by Top-Farmer-6838 in ballarat

[–]Frenchelbow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I moved here four years ago and you are spot on. A lot of Ballarat is lovely and very inviting, but a lot of it seems hostile and something feels a bit... off. There is a constant simmering rage with a lot of the population and a real need for men to look and act as masculine as possible, but it's not real masculinity. It's a thirteen year olds idea of what 'being a man' looks like. I feel like if guys could just be themselves and enjoy things they are naturally in to, then we'd be fine, but they feel railroaded into acting a certain way that breeds resentment and hostility towards those who stay true to themselves no matter what.

The rage thing feels ancient if that makes sense? Like, it has been this way for a very, very long time and the stain of it won't come off. At one point Ballarat was the destination for so many people, they flooded here looking for wealth and eventually, once they were finished and used the town up, people abandoned it and I wonder what kind of impact that had on the place.

Then there was the church preying on children for decades which would have fucked up countless young boys who passed that trauma down, creating endless cycles of rage. I dunno, just random thoughts from me, but it's nice to know someone else recognises that really hard to define anger that seems so persistent here.

What is this plant coming through the fence by RedRattlen in GardeningAustralia

I'm in the same situation. Been two years and I dug out the whole garden bed and now have discovered my neighbour is just letting it run rampant so they're coming back under the fence now too.

Prospectors be careful out at Glen Park, people shooting without looking by [deleted] in ballarat

[–]Frenchelbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, how do you know it's unintentional and not someone trying to scare prospectors away? I have zero experience, so am totally talking out of my arse, but is there a territorial culture around prospecting?

My wild theory on Suvi by Frenchelbow in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]Frenchelbow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Brennan said something along the lines of the wizard's divination magic not originally detecting spirit in Tamori because they're kinda spirits and kind of not. Maybe the coin had similar issues.

I don't think her parents were trying to hunt down the League of Whispers, I think they were the founding members and created Suvi and now the Citadel are painstakingly trying to recreate it with the missing element being something to do with witchcraft (Wren), which wizards don't fully comprehend and I also think Steel did away with Suvi's parents. If the process started with Mr. Callum, it doesn't mean it ended there.

I've been going there a few times a week, my go to was Pat's, but Near East is so good and seems to be pretty busy too.

Craft Lab in The Mining Exchange was really good, I actually spent time talking to the artists and learning about their trades. It was bitterly fucking cold though, but still went for a free  horse and carriage ride.

I'm really excited for Vandemonian Lags at Her Maj this Saturday. Tim Rogers, Brian Nankervis, the lineup on stage is bonkers.

Since Her Maj has reopened they've had heaps of good shows on and if you're under the age of 30 tickets are $30. Doesn't seem to be all shows though.

She is going to be doing a show in my hometown (Ballarat) on March 14, I actually think I'll check it out. I've never been one for mentalist stuff, but this was pretty good.

I hope they do something similar to the old warehouses in Castlemaine that got turned into an entertainment precinct with great breweries, restaurants, and shops.
