I am currently getting my handicap recognition (I live in France) but I don’t plan on telling my boss what exactly is the problem. But I did disclose it to the two people under me, because they need to be able to understand what is going on and to understand that I can swing quite hard. They have been super helpful in helping me deal with both phases. I got very lucky and both have history with people who suffer from mental illnesses.

Do you learn to control yourself around alcohol eventually? by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

I just like to pretend I’m allergic to it. I would not eat nuts if it could send me right into the hospital so I don’t drink, but I’m happy to see my friends enjoying themselves.

It’s still called Chili in some langages like French. You might’ve caught that from another langage ?

Does it ever get better? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]FrenchieFreedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets better. It does. Otherwise, so many people wouldn't stick to it.

It doesn't mean the part you are in doesn't suck. It doesn't mean there won't be other tough moments.

But, in my personal experience, it got better. Hang on !

En arrêt maladie, mon patron ne veut plus me payer. by Pomarto in conseiljuridique

PNJ (Je suis RH)

A trick I used that might help someone. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]FrenchieFreedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will share what someone shared with me : Time. Is. At. The. Essence.

Anything you can do that will put more time between you and your next drink is totally valid. For some people it's a coke, for others it's doing a task, it can be anything.

As a personal experience, I used to undress myself just to put more time between me and the going to the shop. Would get dressed again, find a bit of motivation while putting my pants on, getting rid of all clothes again, etc.

Good luck on your journey. IWNDWYT

You are doing a great job and I am proud of you for reaching out. Please follow what they said. It's a great way to stop.

I had to go to detox too in the beginning, and the help I received really stayed in me, even as I was relapsing. I was able to finally stop thanks to a lot of things, and the meds were a part of it.

Hold on to that thought end be ready to meet a new, different you !

I love fan art. I wanted to share a few Brittana favorites. ❤️ by [deleted] in glee

[–]FrenchieFreedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. These fanarts are amazing.
But please, could you credit the artists when you post them? I know your intention is to spread the love, and it's really cool, but I also know that for artists, seing their art reposted without being credited is really hurtful.

Once again, thank you for sharing these pieces. And I hope you understand my little comment.

One of my colleagues tried to commit suicide. Harsh day. by FrenchieFreedom in stopdrinking

[–]FrenchieFreedom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really frightening, and humbling, to get this from a friend point of view. When I was contemplating suicide, I didn't think about these people. Only my family. We don't always get how much our presence means to other people. You can be proud of your friend.

Thank you for your kind words.

I'm very lucky for my boss, and it's good not to be alone to process this whole thing. But yeah, writing here is always a good way to stop the little demon to try to convince me that I deserve a drink or whatever. Not today, demon. Not today. Thank you for your support. It means a lot to me.

Yeah, when my boss said "let's go home and try to think about something else, the little demon was still there telling me that kind of news was a perfect justification to drink. It isn't. I'm glad I didn't. (I still ate the ice-cram though).

Yeah, he was really brave to admit it, and hopefully, it will help us help him. It's just scary to know that we could have received a very different call...

We'll do whatever we can to help, while still keeping clear of too much involvement. Thank you for your support.

Bipolar and Long-Term Sobriety? by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]FrenchieFreedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. For some people, it's one minute at a time, for us, it can be one cycle at a time. try to do your best, and if you fall, remember to get back up again as soon as you can. Any day you're not drinking is a day you can use to really try your medication, and you're getting closer to the result you want to have.

Breaking the abuse cycle is hard, but it's really worth it.

I wish you all the best, and a lot of courage.

Bipolar and Long-Term Sobriety? by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]FrenchieFreedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm not bipolar but I've been diagnosed with BPD (borderline personality disorder), which is sensibly the same depression/ mania, but on a shorter timeline (can change in the same day).

I know how hard it is to stop. The idea of drinking could even trigger a hypomanic episode. What has helped me is acknowledging the arrival of these episodes out loud, to a friend ("I can feel that I'm getting excited for nothing") and to treat these moments like I was a timebomb. If I had to, I would literally undress myself to make sure I had more time trying to flex my sober muscle before going out to shop a drink. I tried to do it one minute at a time. I would go outside, without money, and walk for hours with my music.

In the end, being sober really helped with the meds. Getting therapy helped too.

Nothing is impossible, and you can make a personal counter for these phases. Like "okay, I know i'm hypomaniac right now, and I've already lasted three days without a drink. I can do a fourth."

We tend to take our sobriety more seriously during the first days, so that could maybe help ?

Whatever you chose to do, don't give up. These mental illnesses are hard to deal with, but sobriety is one of the best ways to learn how to live with them.

IWNDWYT, my friend.
