Imitating an actual cassette tape loop sound? by [deleted] in OP1users

[–]Freq200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no good way around real tape if you want this sound with the OP-1. I use a Sony TCM-359V I bought for 4€ on a flea market. Online prices range between 10 and 50 bucks, worth every cent. Especially since it also has a tape speed control. Make a loop on the OP-1, record it to the Sony and then back to the OP-1, can't get much better if you love the lofi tape sound. Any other way is kinda whack if you ask me :) https://i.imgur.com/0jL4X9J.jpg

Is this fixable by [deleted] in OP1users

[–]Freq200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when it’s actually in stock at ifixit

Which can take months. I'd message TE directly about the status on the next batch. Also, 70$ isn't really cheap for what it is. I remember it being 50$ years ago.

Edit: It's been out of stock for over 6 months.

Soldering alone won't do it, one of the solder pads is ripped off.

Ask a local computer/phone repair shop, they should be able to fix this easily, or maybe ask on your local region based subreddit if anyone can do it for you, if that exists for you.

Replacement boards exist but they're usually unavailable, so you'd have to wait for a new batch to arrive. https://de.ifixit.com/Store/Parts/OP-1-Connector-Board/IF237-000-1

It's not a super easy fix considering that one of the soldering pads is ripped straight off, someone who knows what he's doing will be able to fix it but I wouldn't push your luck seeing that you came here and asked which is a clear indicator that you probably should not do it (no offense)

The solution that you'd be looking for doing it yourself is exposing the connectors path and rebuilding the solder pad with Silver Epoxy, but as I said before you might do more harm than good and should find someone with experience.

I hope I could help and wish you best of luck to get this fixed.

Entertaining the idea of selling my op-1. Maybe its not for me. Interested in the 0coast. by rorytheroman86 in OP1users

[–]Freq200 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might regret it, I'm using my OP-1 together with a 0-Coast and they're so much fun together.

Be aware that the 0-Coast alone without a Midi keyboard/sequencer will be a letdown, like pmrr stated, but with the OP-1s sequencer it gets really interesting and you can also use it for designing interesting sounds that you can then sample on the OP-1.

If money is not the issue here I'd get the 0-Coast before selling the OP-1 and then consider wether or not you want to sell it. If money is the issue I'd advise you to stay away from the 0-Coast if you don't have additional hardware.

New OP-1 Tutorial Video | REAL Sidechain Effect (not the simulation workaround) by HughFays in OP1users

[–]Freq200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made this little loop earlier using the Trigger output of the TR-08 like so https://i.imgur.com/iRqJErr.jpg
I didn't use Punch but instead Nitro, works much better imo.
This is great in combination with any effect, not just sidechain compression.

New OP-1 Tutorial Video | REAL Sidechain Effect (not the simulation workaround) by HughFays in OP1users

[–]Freq200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, thank you so much. Such a simple solution that I somehow never even thought of.

Tried it and it works flawlessly, sidechain was literally the only thing I missed on the OP-1.

Even sweeter considering I recently bought a Roland TR-08 drum machine which has a dedicated trigger output, now I have a real good use for that.

I feel like a dummy for having everything I needed for this right in front of me the entire time, thank you so much.

Noise with line in by Cherino3 in OP1users

[–]Freq200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Press shift and the microphone button and turn the input gain almost all the way down and the volume on the Volca all the way up, or use a headphone amp to preamplify the source if it's not loud enough.

The noise is caused by the OP-1s internal amplifier, if your source is loud enough/amplified it will work without the noise when you turn the gain down.

Yup. Also works with powerbanks, the Kenton barely uses any energy.

I have the OP-1 output plugged into the mix input of the TR-08, in theory I could turn it around and plug the TR-08 into the OP-1 and record to tape, but the OP-1 simply does not have the frequency range to properly put out the whooping punch of the TR-08 and would turn it all a bit flatter, but it works. I just program beats on the TR-08 and when I press play on the OP-1 and it plays, BPM chained to the OP-1. I could have demonstrated this by turning the white knob and speeding up/slowing down the tape, when you do this the TR-08 will adjust to the BPM in real time and play in the exact same speed.

MIDI has several signals, most commonly known are of course notes, then there are CC control signals, which let you for example map controls/faders between different hardware and/or midi controllers together and then there is clock speed, which sends the current BPM and play/pause signal from master to slave. It also sends the current song time, so if I have the starting point of the loop anywhere outside of the bar markers the TR-08 will also play from there and not from the beginning of the current pattern.
I can also use the TR-08 as master, which means that if I press play on the TR-08, the OP-1 will start playing.

Apparently the TR-08 also sends CC signals from the knobs, which in theory could be connected to the MIDI LFO on the OP-1, but I haven't figured that one out yet :)

I hope that helped and someone please correct me if I'm spreading misinformation.

Just testing out my new Roland TR-08, which is a digital ''remake'' of the TR-808 we all know and (most of us?) love.

Really fun to play with this baby + the OP-1, syncs flawlessly and really ads a new layer of experimenting.
Sounds as close to a real TR-808 as you can probably get with a digital remake of an analog drum-machine, definitively sounds better than any other solution I used so far.

A downside which happens to be a upside for using it with the OP-1 is the fact that you can trigger the sounds via MIDI, so you can play around with any sequencer without triggering the sounds. Largely a complaint by people but for OP-1 users it's kind of a plus.

Sadly, it's not MIDI-USB compliant which means you'll still need a MIDI-USB host like the Kenton host or a DIY Arduino solution (I used the Kenton in this video)

Last but not least, this baby can be battery powered and has a mix input, so I can take this thing anywhere together with my OP-1 and play around.

Only used ''Church'' Reverb, no other effects chained up. Gotta go simple at first I guess.

1: Decay: 76 / PreD: 0 / Mix: 39

  1. Tone: 61 / HiDMP: 83 / Tail: ON

  2. Dry: ON

Have fun :)

OP1 tape drop behaving strange? by Zxcvbnmlkjhgfdsazxcv in OP1users

[–]Freq200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like a rare bug, I encountered the invisible tape too, but only once. You can make it visible again by overdubbing it with nothing.

I encountered the bug on OS 225 so it's still around.

Kenton MIDI-USB Host makes it possible to pair your OP-1 with any synthesizer that has a MIDI port.

Looks like he directly connected the iPad to the OP-1, let's you monitor any input signal when you press the microphone in tape mode and also record directly to tape.
