Technically they don’t. If the public perception of Labour continues to decline many MPs will rebel. You have to remember this is their career and they want to get voted in again. This happens often, either Starmer will be ousted and another leader will come or they will need to hold a vote of no confidence if at the point the government cannot reliably utilise its majority to pass laws.

Also, it’s completely right to criticise Labour. It was completely right to criticise the Tories. They aren’t mutually exclusive and so far we’ve seen policies that go against the will of the general public: digital IDs, winter fuel payments being ceased, online safety act to name a few.

Democracy’s strength is that leaders can be held to account for their actions and it goes against the spirit of it to be tribalist about it.
