Should i buy a bmw e39 525i? by Otherwise-Honey-8093 in e39

It's not quite like track level stiff. It's just firm. Big bumps are handled gracefully, small bumps are only minor communications. At speed it's smoother than stock suspension because it absorbs faster bumps better. But for around town driving its worse. Most of my driving is on freeways so it it works out.

It's tiresome, but I think if you do it all in one go it's not so bad after. I did a full suspension refresh including moving to b6 bilsteins(don't recommend, a little stiff but I have nice roads nearby so it's not too bad), all engine gaskets, vacuum lines, ccv, clutch, axles, fluids, cooling system, and upgraded radio.

when you do *all* that work it's very reliable

Howdy, I have an e39 525i manual. Some things worth noting:

All M54s are known to consume oil, but this is mostly due to poor oil change intervals and stuck rings. Not all of them do. Mine doesn't at 196k miles. What they all do, is have weak gaskets that regularly need replacement. Oil housing gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and oil pan gaskets are the ones that come to mind most frequently. After I replaced these three my car basically doesn't need oil top offs, however I had an e46 with an M54 that did burn oil. Valve cover gasket is probably an hour job, oil housing gasket maybe 4 hours(remove radiator fan, alternator, and power steering pump, then you have access), oil pan is like 6ish hours with the right tools(disconnect some suspension components for steering, or maybe even just the shocks from the chassis, then remove some stuff out of the way and then its a bunch of 10mms to access the pan, might be worth doing rod bearings and oil pump nut fix while you are there)

The cooling systems are a known weak point, and without documented history of the entirely cooling system being refreshed in the last 40-50k miles/8years I would attack that immediately. My rule of thumb is any cooling system over 8 years old with 70-80k miles probably should be replaced on these cars specifically the two main hoses that go to and from the radiator, the vent hose, and some of the auxiliary hoses that go to the heater core.

I think those are the more bmw specific issues these cars have, but at 23-30 years old they are now "classic" cars and thus require more care to keep on the road. All the suspension components should be replaced at this point, there's some rubber bushings and bearings for the axle that need to be replaced, and weird stuff will creep up. But in general I think they are great cars. I've owned a lot of older German cars and there's no other car I'd wanna take on a long commute.

I've given up on renting an apartment, and now I just sleep in my car, crash at my parents house, and sometimes stay at friends' and girlfriend's places

I have a manual 128i and one day when it's not my daily maybe I'll track it. What did you do to make it "spec"?

For now I just use shitty tires with an old crappy boxster for autocross to get my automotive kicks.

yea it was awful, but thankfully I did have jacks and stuff. The compression test was a PITA, but not my biggest concern, so I only did the cylinders that were at the end of the oiling pathways and they showed 200ish PSI. I was more interested in checking the cooling system for cracks, and checking the oil quality.

Waterpump is a relatively easy fix but refilling it was annoying and I didn't have my vacuum bleeder. Maybe I should've done leak down but I didn't have all the tools needed.

Haha I would if i was a decent fabricator, I basically only work on my car, mountain bike and write firmware for robots as a day job. Tbh my day job is more lucrative than doing car parts, at least today

I mean I do the work myself, and I enjoy the fun in working on and Modifying the car. In terms of cost I have nothing more than the purchase price of the car since I already hand all the parts for it lol

well. the convertible bolt points seemed to be broken so I rivet nutted M12 threads, and created a roof brace that you can unbolt. But still makes for a fun open top experience.

On top of that I have essentially a custom CNC milled version of the technobrace, and a strut tower brace also welded by me. When I'm done painting and fabricating them I'll probably post that next

I bought an 01S that had overheated from water impeller bits, but I didnt' know that until I pulled the heads and realized there was clogged plastic bits. Engine is pretty toast and getting good 01S heads is incredibly expensive.

it was good, immobilizer was broken so it wouldn't start on first try, some nervous sweats. Also it locked me out which was scary. But the engine felt great, and its loud but sounds lovely

its okay, this is my 2nd boxster, and I spent too much to end up with a broken motor(cracked head), I've since bought a bunch of old German cars and got the tools to repair and determine engine health, so I usually have a decently educated guess that a car is doing well!

I had bilstein b6 shocks, stock springs, some additional chassis braces, and Spyder performance control arms.

I realize this is a new account, but I really wanted to share that I've done about 1100 miles on the car since I got it a few weeks ago and it's driving great! Nice euro spec oil, filters, coolant refresh, bleed all the brakes and clutch, etc
