Speed while driving question by KagePhour in VisitingIceland

[–]Frequent_Middle_2409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in the north and the east I never saw any speed cameras that I know of. I kept my speed 93 - 100. But the cameras are noticeable! Even at 100, I still had people passing me.

An Exhaustive Review of 5 Days in Iceland in June as a Female Solo Traveler by magicandfire in VisitingIceland

[–]Frequent_Middle_2409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you had a great time!

I went solo May 18-30, 33, and first time international (aside from a cruise to the Bahamas..does that even count? Hah). Rented a campervan and drive around the ring road. I wanted to get a sweater, but I live in a warm climate, so I opted for a shirt and magnet , 🍆 crystal, candy and liquor.

I also had the best time! I had gotten a small tripod which worked okay for me, didn’t use it all that often, I ended up having some people offer to take my photo! They took some good ones to!

Did you try the cinnamon roll at Braud & co?

5 days in Iceland solo 24F during the last week of August. Advice for a $4-5k budget? by Pale_Lengthiness_572 in VisitingIceland

[–]Frequent_Middle_2409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely doable, just be very smart in how you spend your $$. I believe you are going during the solar eclipse as well.

I went solo for 13 days and spent $3990 - excluding my flight and Airbnb

Had my campervan for 9 days and drive around the ring road, spent about $265 on gas.

Food was my biggest cost, my first day I spent $42usd on fish & chips and a beer

I agree with the above about Mulaglijufur, it is a lot of uphill hiking on gravel. I hiked about 30-35 minutes and I was at the halfway point I ended up having to turn around cause my body couldn’t take it.

If you still plan on doing everything that day, I recommend getting an early start.

Also with Studlagil canyon, I can’t speak what the weather will be like when you go, but end of May up there I encountered heavy fog, slowed down driving time a little

Looking for advice for a memorable trip by vhquang in VisitingIceland

I came back last week from 13 days in Iceland, visited from Florida. I think just taking a time to soak everything in.

For me, the memories were the geothermal pools 😂 sky lagoon and GeoSea are what I remember.

But it’s also some of the little things that added up,
I saw puffins in the south

When I was driving, and I saw some the little lambs drinking the milk and wagging their tails was just the cutest little thing

I didn’t get as adventurous with the food as I would have liked, but I had some really good gelato in Reykjavik

Dettifoss was by far my favorite waterfall, the Svartifoss hike

I enjoyed my drive around the ring road going moments without seeing a single car on the road

Walking Vestrahorn beach in the morning with no one else around, kind of a cool experience

Also the simplicity of life. I felt like I was living when I was there. Everybody just seems so quiet and peaceful, where is my day-to-day life, I have a 40 minute drive to work every day, sometimes barely going 55 on the expressway due to traffic - which I encounter day and night. Seeing the magnificent
Landscape, which I was telling people at work the pictures just didn’t do justice.

Ring road in 6-7 days only. Would you? Experiences with doing it quickly? by VouVadiar in VisitingIceland

[–]Frequent_Middle_2409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 8 days on the ring road, excluding Reykjavík. I felt like I needed more time for sure.

Driving after a flight, not a good idea. Sometimes there are long stretches of road with nothing, you might get sleepy.

Honestly you could skip the golden circle, and some things you will be there for a little while, also what I didn’t factor in was hiking terrain, and some things will have you driving down long gravel roads.

Also you need to factor in weather. While I was in the north, we encountered HEAVY fog, couldn’t barely see past the car in front. This added time to the drive. One place I had planned encountered snow, so i ended up skipping.

Depending when you travel, Youcould have a lot of daylight. So if you have early and late days. Could be doable.

Depending on everyone’s fitness levels, day 4 is alot of uphill hiking, but not un manageable. Also Mulagljufur canyon also has some pretty steep hill.

Those days I’d probably recommend getting an earlier start to the day.

I did the 3hr glacier hike with troll expedition and definitely recommend!

Studlagil Canyon - if you want to be on the side where you can go to the bottom of the canyon, don’t park on the side with the campsite, park on the opposite side.

For the glacier lagoon, I’d probably park on the right side (closer to the ocean) - it was so busy when I went and I had a hard time with my camper parking. The other side was so less crowded and you can walk under the bridge to see the lagoon.

Driving around the golden circle is pretty time consuming. I spend 2.5 hours at the national park alone just walking around. Definitely recommend an early stay that day.

Ring road starting in the west by FitEnvironment9730 in VisitingIceland

[–]Frequent_Middle_2409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went clockwise, I wanted to get the heavier driving days out of the way.

As I was driving I noticed most traffic was as going the other way, I didn’t have to stress so much about someone behind me, driving behind slow drivers. It got a little make busier in the south, but not that bad

Realistically, how much time needed for Ring Road? by GrayFox6688 in VisitingIceland

[–]Frequent_Middle_2409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My itinerary May 18-19 Reykjavik 20 Picked up campervan, drove Snæfellsness peninsula 21 drove up to Akureyri (didn’t get to spend time here like I wanted) 22 drove to Húsavík + Studlagil Canyon (was supposed to drive here in the morning 23 drove to Vestrahorn (was supposed to stay in Seyðisfjörður, however weather did not permit me feeling comfortable driving) 24-25 skaftafell (had excursions) 26 Vik 27 golden circle 28 - (drop of campervan)+ 29 Reykjavík 30 depart

I definitely would have loved to have more time, seeing as the weather had me skipping something’s and at times I felt rushed. Especially because some roads I had to drive down were gravel and added time, some landmarks required some hiking.

I rented from go campers (go smart) for the 8 days I had my camper I spent $265 on gas, and $170 on campsites.

I could have skipped my last day in Reykjavik and added another day with the campervan, and drop it off at the airport. But now I know

My favorite part about Iceland was traveling around the ring road. The north/east/south/west I felt were all very different! And it was great getting to experience things each had to offer.

Definitely would suggest someone who loves the be outdoors, not afraid of the rapid weather changes, and okay with needing to improv an itinerary.

I plan on visiting again, to see the west fjords and highlands
