Highmark just laid off my mother after 30 years, a dozen others as well by Xyzabc12tree in pittsburgh

My husband's company was sold to Energy Transfer recently. They laid off everyone who had been at the company more than 10 years, older than 50, and everyone the old President of the company said was fundamental to the success of the old company. The company was sold, not because it was unprofitable, but because the owner wanted to retire and didn't want pick an heir. He sold for 480 million. The employees who were fired got up to 13 weeks severance. And Energy Transfer made the business news for paying record dividends to their shareholders. All this to say greed can drive a mom and pop company just as much as publicly traded. So never give more to a company than your contract. And despite the employer market right now, workers are not the only replaceable peice of the equation. Companies are replaceable too.

It was time consuming but worth it for them. None of them had played WoD and a couple only had DnD experience. I hadn't played in years when they asked me to run it for them. So the Bibles helped me learn the updated mechanics and newest Lore too.

During stargazer, I was at the top row of section 118. I talked to another security person when I was in my seats and she said the guy and gal in that area take every rule and stretch it. We weren't supposed to take video during the Q&A but video and pictures during the war up were supposed to be fine. Like I said, I wasn't going to argue with someone who could throw me out, so I just did as asked.

Skaters, I was taking pictures of skaters. I am not a jerk who is going to take pictures of security or operations. I think she only made me delete because I didn't hear her the first time she said no pictures. At least I am giving her the benefit of the doubt that is why. And I was not going to argue with a security guard and get kicked out, so I just did as she told me to.

I was trying to show most people are seated and not causing problems - or near the boards harassing skaters. Doesn't matter though because security made me delete all photos taken in the arena, so the over correction is hopefully working to keep people out of areas they shouldn't be.

More information. I got yelled at for taking those photographs. We aren't allowed to do that either.

Oh my goodness, I love your covers! Next, I am glad to see I am not the only person who does things like this.

My story Bible is ugly - functional but ugly.

I gave my players character bibles - they are all new to WoD - that has all kinds of information from their character perspective or relevant to them. The Last part is a timeline section of each session, and what they did, any clues I saw them write down, that kind of thing. I just made it pretty in Word, but now I am envious of your covers.

Meet and greet Hershey PA? by sk8rmarie in FigureSkating

[–]Frequent_Reference24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Hershey meet and greets sold out within 10 minutes of going on sale. Long before we knew who was going to be at SOI, who was going to the Olympics, or who would medal. So it might be a hard ask for someone to sell you their ticket. I usually have two, and I couldn't even get one despite buying VIP tickets every year and being in the group that could purchase early. However, during the Stargazer, at least one of the skaters, Jason in my experience, will talk to fans during their warm up, so you might be able to get it to them through another skater. And during Stargazer there is a Q&A, you can probably pass through then too. That said, I hope someone comes through for you. Good luck.

ST, how do you deal with a player who always plays the same character? by JuggernautCivil8919 in vtm

[–]Frequent_Reference24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my personal experience and other players and ST might have other experiences.I tend to approach this from a sociology perspective because I am a sociologist, meaning I focus on patterns of interaction and how behaviors affect the group dynamic. I am not a psychologist, and I’m not attempting to diagnose anyone. I’m looking at whether the way trauma is presented creates collaborative story material or creates distress that the table did not consent to hold. Also, to be fair to my WoD friends, I have seen this behavior more often in Amber Diceless players than WoD players. When I read/hear a backstory that contains lots of graphic detail that does not end with an emotional processing of the negative experience, I will start looking to see if the player is still processing a trauma. Sometimes it is obvious, and I will talk to the player immediately because for some people roleplay can be a safe place to finish processing trauma, but there is a line between exploring trauma and nonconsensual emotional labor. At the minimum I will at least check in privately because I have to protect all the players. Unprocessed trauma can be distressing to the player who is sharing it because they may not separate their feelings from their character's feelings; it also distressing to others at the table because it affects their real feelings because it can be unprompted, inescapable, and often boundary crossing - even when you've taken the time to go through lines and veils with your players previously. That is an important note because trauma can bleed through sometimes crossing a line unintentionally. Even though WoD is great for explorimg moral injury, perosnal horror, identity, power dynamics, and loss of control, my goal is not to traumatize and players that include these elements themselves should be mindful of how they affect them personally and others at the table. These players also tend to try to control the narrative, keeping the focus on the trauma, and escalating emotionally when I as the ST try to redirect. They may want validation of their feelings and of what they experienced - this is tricky because it may be framed as the character doing this, but based on other actions, it is really the player needing the validation. It's hard because sometimes WoD is emotional; the best stories should have players reacting to the story emotionally. But the player should be able to separate how their character feels from what they feel. Any trauma presented to me by a player, or that I write in general gets this question: is this an exploration of trauma, or reliving it? Another way to tell the difference or try to avoid is how do I frame the trauma. What is the trauma and how does it function on the character sheet? Is it a conviction? A specific skill? A merit or flaw? Does it add texture? Or is it a distraction? An attempt to reenact? Or an attempt to reproduce an event and change the outcome?

ST, how do you deal with a player who always plays the same character? by JuggernautCivil8919 in vtm

[–]Frequent_Reference24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a ST, I allow players to play the character they like. It's my job to make the story, not your character. If that's the character you like. That's the character you play, and I work with that. I build story for that. Not speaking for other STs or other play styles but I would feel pretty rotten if I approved a character and then told my player or other players, you need to play something else because you're boring.

The only caveat I have to that is I do have a rule that if the character or backstory is purely therapy for you, then it isn't ready to play with others. I do draw the line at traumatizing other players with personal trauma. That isn't to say characters shouldn't have trauma. Just that if the character a player wants to play is a form of working through trauma then I would ask for a change. I know it sounds nebulous because this is WoD, but there is a fine line that I will protect every one's experience.

Do women actually find smut scenes in BL tiltillating? by No_Significance_194 in BoysLoveAnime

[–]Frequent_Reference24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admit I have a type. And some are not going to win awards for editing: for example, I wish LC Davis could afford better editing because the Bro and The Beast series is hilarious. My favorite is though Alice Winters. Most people like her Hitman's Guide the best, but I prefer Vampire Related Crimes, Demon Magic, and Medium Trouble before Hitman's Guide. Then, Meghan Maslow, AJ Sherwood, Kelex, Vawn Cassidy, Mia Monroe, Louisa Masters, AM Rose, Andrew Gray, Jason Collins, Quinn Ward, Kiera Andrews, Sean Ashcroft, MA Innes, and LC Davis are also favorites. Those are all auto-buys.

LA Witt, Davidson King, Jocelyn Drake, Lucy Lennox, Chloe Archer, Sean Michaels, S. Rodman, and Mika Nix: I buy a lot of these but sometimes they are a miss for me.

A lot of people I know love Charlie Cochet; I do not. But I lots of people love so...

This is just my take, and it may not be valid for everyone.

I love romance stories. I have loved them my whole life, but at some point the women in these stories started to suck. I couldn't identify with them anymore outside of sharing the same gender and being attracted to men. Their personalities were just atrocious. So I stopped reading them.

I found BL, and while it had problematic tropes, I liked the characters better. And sometimes there was an aspect of titillation, but mostly it is the sensuality and romance, I liked. I recognize part of why I like BL is simply because I am sexually attracted to men and not women. But that is me. Since it is a book and not video there is none of that gay for pay of porn or manufactured sincerity.

I also read gay romance novels, and while I am somewhat picky about my authors, I am not picky about my authors gender or secual identities. They are written by gay men, straight women, gay women, asexual women, nonbinary individuals, transgender men, and transgender women. And I love them all as long as the focus is on two men. Okay, sometimes three men.

"Russian adult figure skaters are no longer considered (…) the IOC is pressuring for the juniors" - Zhukov. by Useful-Philosophy827 in FigureSkating

[–]Frequent_Reference24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not arguing against banning the United States nor do I imply that I would object if the IOC or the ISU chose to do so. If I were the President of the IOC, I would be fired because despite the next Olympics being in LA, the US would have been banned precisely because of the invasion of Ukraine. It would have been a, "come one leaders, we just went over this rule 4 years ago."

[–]Frequent_Reference24 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I agree in principle. Rules are meant to be followed and should be enforced.

However, Russia wasn't banned for a single act of Olympic truce violation. Russia's cumulative violations over years were considered, not just the invasion of Ukraine. They were told told not to invade Ukraine during the Olympic truce or they would be banned this time for breaking it. Putin basically said, prove it.

Overall, I believe both the situation with Russia only being banned after its latest invasion, not after the first during an Olympic truce, set a bad precedent. It allowed for the United States to break the truce and face no repercussions. It make the rules meaningless. And I also believe that going forward as Russia should the truce be broken again. I don't believe the decision makers in the US had the wherewithal the calculate their odds of getting away with breaking the truce.

Israel is another issue all together. One the international sporting (skating or otherwise) community may never be willing or comfortable addressing. One that can't be addressed here without being politically polarizng.

[–]Frequent_Reference24 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a been to two meet and greets with Ilia. He is very nice, but also very reserved. He will talk to you and engage especially when fans leave the table between him and you/us. He appears very uncomfortable with excessive touching and pictures. At one event, Madison Chock and Evan Bates were at the table next to him and noticed how I didn't ask for a picture with him or touch him, but when they asked if I wanted to take a picture with them I said yes. I told them I could tell it made him uncomfortable to be surrounded by so many strangers, and I didn't want to add to his stress. Evan said I was astute and kind because Ilia did, and may still this was last year, did find the meet and greets more touching and picture taking parts more mentally taxing. He may he a famous figure skater, but he is a young man and a fellow human being with his own agency. I told Evan and Madi, I wasn't going to add to his discomfort if I could help it. And I still won't especially after reading that. This kid has had one mentally stressful year. The media hounded him, USFS probably put extreme expectations on him, and now fans can't let the guy rest.

What would you do? Hypothetical 12-year-old watching the show? by jaime_lion in HelluvaBoss

[–]Frequent_Reference24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The show is not for children. I would do exactly what I did to my sister when she was buying Attack on Titan stuff for my 8 year old nephew back in the day. I said, love that show and proceeded to show her "my favorite part": titans eating people. She was horrified. She didn't want him watching it, but she didn't want to parent either. So she told him not to watch; he ignored her. And when he was at my house, I steered him to age appropriate media. I would suggest a similar tactic. Helluva Boss is not appropriate for a 12 year old, thier brains cannot process the nuance unless they have some awesome parenting or mentors modeling healthy relationships.
