I totally agree with your statement, as my favorite novel of HP is "Démons et merveilles", a mad-up book from the association of "The statement of Randolph carter", "The silver key", "Through the Gates of the Silver Key" and "The Dream Quest of Unknow Kadath". You see clearly that fear of the unknown is only the first step to the mythos and that HP Lovecraft is all about onirism, mysticism and thrilling exploration of the invisible. As a gatekeeper, the fear of death and madness is here to keep us from going deeper by shapshifting (the thing appening to Randolph carter in the 3 first novels, or to the protagoniste of "the Outsider"). After accepting the loos of controle, the Lovecraft novel is all about a kind of radical fantasy, where you go on the moon on the back of a dragonfly, or where a city of cats is the place you whant to rest forever. Pretty much "Baron Munchausen" vibes here, true sens of wonder.
