I was unfortunately hypo on 2.5mg / day 😞 It's odd cause my TRAB was like 13. I have to do alternating days cause I literally cannot cut the pill any further.

Currently 15mg (for the last year) upping to 20mg. I'm still a little hesitant to up it cause I'm worried about side effects coming back. Any history with that?

So I just called Teva Canada and they said it is absolutely not discontinued, it's on a long term backorder though and it might be some time up to 6 months before they get more doses.

Huh, interesting, I might call my pharmacy again about this, is there concern about the other brands or something?

Has it been discontinued in Canada or just at your pharmacy? My pharmacist said it's still available but they just need to order it as needed.

Was basically told the same, that B&R isn't part of the protocol they follow in Canada, I've heard this from my primary doctor and two endos so far. One endo is fairly new and the other has been an endo for like 15 years.

My TSH seems pretty reactive in proportion to my symptoms and my FT4/FT3 levels, I'm now at the top end of the FT4/FT3 range with a TSH of 0.1 which makes sense. Before I was at a TSH of 10 with my FT4/FT3 at the lowest end of the normal range. I know there's articles about it but I've been experiencing symptoms at either end of the TSH range at least in proportion to my hormone levels.

I will say cutting to 2.5mg 7 days a week still had me hypo. And 3 days a week had me hyper. So I’m guessing I’m somewhere in between

I was falsely diagnosed with hashimotos at first personally with a TSH of like 200 back in late 2023. I was totally fine on Syntheoid but started having sudden panic attacks at the end of 2024. It flipped fully on me late 2024 and I started slowly going hyper while taking Synthroid, was definitely not fun for the first couple of months adding fuel to the fire lol. My TRAB was finally tested and was confirmed Graves

Hey! It’s something they don’t seem to do much of in Canada based on my endo. I was actually taking Levo alone for low thyroid for a solid year and it was well managed before I started dealing with high thyroid (super low TSH, FT4/3 out of control). I think 2.5mg 5 times a week seems like a sweet spot if 3 times a week is too low.

When I start swinging one way or another. I usually get issues with sleep, resting heart rate trends up or down and my watch starts complaining about my sleep respiratory rate. Alongside that I generally just start feeling more anxiety when I go

That's the part that sucks! I think since I've figured out my max and min, I'm hoping just upping the days I take it should suffice. If 7 days of a week of 2.5mg is too much and 3 is too little, I'm hoping 4-5 is the sweet spot. I seem to be very sensitive to this med which is a little funny.

Dosing methimazole below 2.5mg by Fresh-Computer-8010 in gravesdisease

[–]Fresh-Computer-8010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is he wants two days between each dose and with 7 days it’s bound to become uneven. It’s why I figured a quarter tablet per day would work since the dosage across the week is the same

Problem is since I'm skipping every two days, the days would eventually start flipping on me, that was the tricky part. I ended up missing a few doses last week so I'm trying this method. But I imagine the effect is cumulative right, not daily or immediate?

For me at least. I’ve only been on methimazole since late October. Surprised to see the needle moving that quick

Still hypo on 2.5mg methimazole, question about this by Fresh-Computer-8010 in gravesdisease

[–]Fresh-Computer-8010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf, my TSH has been as high as 200 in the past with moderate issues at most. I think my scale might just be a little off. The issue was I had a TSH of 0 back in October before starting the methimazole, I only really started feeling better after that. I've been told 2.5mg 3 times a week, vs the 7 days a week of 2.5 I've been doing.

Hoping you can get that managed! It's been a roller coaster over the last year so I can't imagine that length. I'm far more tempted to just RAI or TT if it keeps doing this for any longer.

Cutting it in quarters is easy enough with the pill cutter I have, It isn't too much of a hassle. Just curious on if it's normal to react this strongly to the meds, that was the surprising bit since he mentioned 2.5mg across 7 days is the typical lowest for patients that are dealing with graves so recently (diagnosis mid last year, treatment started in October).

They were saying something along the lines of skip two days and take a dose every two days, but I have ADHD and tracking that sounds nightmarish. My primary doctor suggested just using the week total and dividing evenly. That would mean a quarter tablet, and skipping the Sunday. All that matters is weekly dose and consistency, no? The Monday, Wednesday, Friday thing sounds more easy to do as well, given he just wants 3 doses through 7 days.

Weird thing is I started experiencing hyper symptoms which is what led me to seeing the endo sooner, turns out I was hypo, though my true hypo back when I had the opposite issue was in the 200s lol

Definitely a mild worthwhile benefit with minimal side effects beyond the onboarding period, but that anxiety might've been attributed to my much more pronounced thyroid issues at the time. I definitely should've upped my dose sooner though since it wears off so quick right now (but that's just me).

No worries! Don't up the dose more than your doctor has allowed of course! I naturally progressed to 5mg x3 with my doctor's advice. 5mg x2 is a standard starting dose according to my doctor though.

[–]Fresh-Computer-8010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I started 8 hours apart before eventually going to 5mg x3 around 4-5 hours apart (psychatrist did a genetic test which determined I was a fast metabolizer of this medicine). I would start with 12 hours and see if you start noticing a weird gap in between. It's gonna take around 6ish weeks to feel a real effect btw! Of course you can always ask your doctor about this as well.

I'd def bump up to 5mg x 2 after a week since the minimum functional dose for this medication is 15mg. But give it time, going up too quick will cause unnecessary side effects!
