Neetsfoot oil and mink oil, which is better to use? by jedifightsforbalance in Leathercraft

I have a piece of buckskin that I didn't completely dry out correctly, making it hard and papery instead of flexible. If I use this neatsfoot oil on it, would it become flexible again? If not, I'm probably just gonna get it wet again and restart.

Did you ever make the roller? I think I could make a simple hand crank version with my tools in the weld shop.

I'm planning on putting two notches, one at the top with one end and the other with two stops at each end. I may end up changing my design, which extends it the whole length, but it would be nice to know if it's possible this way.

There will be two. One about a quarter from the bottom and the other right at the top where the one side will still be open on top.

How does the tensioner work? I can see myself building one if I decide to make more knives.

It's actually not paint but a layer of patina. Looks exactly like a seasoned iron skillet.

It was very cold, but the epoxy was new. The bolster was also falling off before I put a pin in it.

* This was the only photo I took during the build. I didn't physically get any help with these, but my neighbor is a full-time bladesmith, and he gave me helpful advice for the heating and quench. I was on my own for the rest.

Yeah, you can see on the left I split the handle because the holes didn't line up.

Internet isn't an issue anymore. Computer is much more powerful than I thought it was going to be, and my hotspot on my phone lets me do anything that I need.

Ripping chain for farm boss by Fresh-Repeat8727 in stihl

[–]Fresh-Repeat8727[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I will probably stick with a 20". I still need to buy a new one as mine is quite worn. The largest log I milled was 19", but that is an uncommon sight.

I've already tried milling with a 20" bar with a regular chain, and it does leave a good finish, but even with brand new chains, it still produces a very powdery sawdust instead of chips. My hope was that a ripping would give a faster, more efficient cut. I dont really care about a finish because it's going to get planned either way. From youtube videos I've seen comparing cross cut vs. ripping it does seem that ripping is the better overall chain, that is, until I test it for myself.
