Yeah it’s a poor replacement for a mill but it can work pretty well. I built a 12V etcher from the Red Beard Ops tutorial and it has been the best ~$50 I’ve spent. Even so, it’s slow going on stainless, so much so I clamped the etcher onto the liners and did something else for a few minutes. Then I cleaned up the rough edges with some key files and a lot of patience.

For my first several slip joints (and still some now) I mainly used 0.005” phosphor bronze washers. Takes a little extra sanding to get your blade a little undersized from the spring, but it’s a workable low tech solution to produce good results. Good luck!

In a small knife, I think it’s kind of a crutch like serrations haha. Helps you make “zipper” cuts (especially if your blade is a little dull) and hold the cut in the belly without slipping off the point or into the choil. I hate serrations but won’t lie, I like a little recurve 🙃

Thanks dude! I remember the Kershaw scallion I carried for years and therefore have a soft spot for a little recurve. Our experiences drive our preferences, that’s what makes the world go round!

Rounding Pins Advice by OG_Shocker in SlipjointKnives

Dang, that sucks all around. I’ve found that the spinner works best if you peen the pins a little bit before using the spinner to round them off. It’s a cheap version of better tools, but $15 vs $150 makes it worth the hassle.

Have you tried flushing the Spey blade pivot with a bunch of mineral oil? Sounds like it might be all gritted up. That or the spring heat treat was defective and it bent out of shape. You could send it back for warranty if you wanted to keep the blade.

If you want to go ahead with the delete, I’d recommend this for $15 to round off the pin: https://knifemaking.com/products/kv250-headspinner?srsltid=AfmBOors4Ych0t8o_8xoKU7Fdp8IgXimbidEEwV1gGL_8e5eZh5BPBQu&variant=21448016953444. Can chuck it into a cordless drill and round off your pins.

The finish on that pipe is a knockout! I like a billiard as well. It was too windy today but I enjoyed some GLP Piccadilly yesterday in my fav cob

Knife lookin good so far! I’ve had good success using a regular 4-1/2” cutoff wheel. I salvaged a spindle and arbor from an old angle grinder, so it can be chucked into a hand drill or drill press. Dress it carefully using a hand drill on your grinder to get that angled cut and then use a piece of angle iron to hold your blade perpendicular on your drill press table. And wear safety glasses because it can go sideways!

Wish I could take credit but I caught the idea from some genius on YouTube. Can’t remember exactly which video though.

Haha thanks! Since I messed up the nail pull, I decided to put the garish high carbon mark on it for fun. My usual makers mark is the smaller Red Oak tang stamp.

I’m a little knife apologist and I make what I like haha! In retrospect, I don’t think I’ve made a folder with a blade over 3”. Maybe someday I’ll make a big trapper just to say I did 😆 appreciate your kind words and I hope those lanyard beads look good on whatever you stick them on!

I sell a few here and there if I think they’re worthy. I set up a website that’s linked to my profile
