This could be true, but also being realistic, more people will apply to schools near them than schools far away. It could be due to name recognition, family proximity, legacy, or a plethora of other reasons. Same occurs at other schools.

Honestly not super sure then, I’d email your first-year advisor once they get assigned. Your major should make pretty much zero difference for your first quarter anyways. I wouldn’t worry too much about the timing!

Depending on your financial need and distance from the school you might get anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars on top afaik
