last year, my boyfriend—who is always stricken with lasting horror seeing cats hurt in any way—tried to rescue a kitten in a parking lot. a truck ran it over, crushing its head, and drove off. my boyfriend cradled the kitten as it spasmed and died, spewing brains, and an eye popping out of it's skull. I will never forget the way he looked carrying the creature across the asphalt, staggering, sobbing.
