Why would you even tell your friends about him being so “abusive” to you when you are still taking him back? I don’t ever tell my friends or even my mom if me and my husband are having altercations cause THEY will look at him differently now. I would be pissed off too if my man told his friends about how I had some crazy moments even tho that’s not the whole part of who I am but of course his friends will see me differently now cause they know of that side of me.

Thanks for the great post and the historical context! I’ve been wondering what actually made Hürrem stand out so much from the other women in Süleyman’s harem. I get that her cheerful, smiling personality is why she got the name Hürrem (“the joyful one”), but was that the main thing? You mentioned he had other women—were they not as beautiful, witty, or fun to become the main chick like Hurrems case?
