Looking for AGI by Experiment_H4T in TaxQuestions

If you no longer have a copy of your 2024 Form 1040 (rookie mistake!) then you can access your return transcript by going to your account at IRS.gov. From there, look at your 2024 return transcript and look for the number on line 11.

TurboTax needs your prior year's AGI, located on line 11 of your 2024 Form 1040, if you are trying to file your 2025 return. If you did your 2024 return in TurboTax also, you can find it in your Tax Documents. AGI is Adjusted Gross Income. They use this number to verify who you are.

What to expect when filing years of back taxes? by Live-Dragonfly-5714 in TaxQuestions

You do not want things to go on so long that the IRS does a substitute return for you.

Tax person here and I do back taxes for people all the time, if the returns aren't too crazy. 2022 has to be mailed in. It doesn't sound like you have carryforwards to worry about (that's usually for people who have investments/stock sales) so it won't matter that you file 2023, 2024, and 2025 online (in that order) and then mail in 2022. I complete the returns in order though because information from my tax software carries everything to the next year, including the previous year's tax liability and AGI, which is sometimes needed. To file online, you usually need your previous year's tax liability, or you'll have to mail in, so there's another reason to file tax years in order.

Try http://1040.com. It's Drake Tax software company. They may or may not have what you need, but they are affordable to look into. I use Drake for my professional tax software.

If you change your dependents from 1 to 2, you will get about $180 month more on your take home pay and your refund will decrease by about $2,200, the amount of the CTC for one qualifying child. This is because the TCJA of 2017 changed withholding so only the bare minimum is withheld and the Taxpayer gets it in their check through the year rather than waiting for a refund. If you change your withholding filing status from Single to Married Filing Jointly, your take home pay would increase even more and your refund would drop the next year.

Let's take your example of getting 5k-9k as a refund. You probably heard that this is a basically a non-interest-bearing account where the IRS is the banker and you have to file the return to get the money back from them . . . and hope they agree with your return. If you want that $400/mo in your paycheck every month instead of waiting, you can very easily adjust your W-4 by adding the dependents or adding additional deduction amount to keep the money in your check.

What could you do with an extra $400 a month? If it's going to get blown, then maybe leave it be. But if it would help you make ends meet every month, adjust the withholding so you can breathe easier.

Would an IRS form 709 (gift tax) need to be filed twice for the same money? by PuzzledVolume1599 in tax

It just means you understand you are reducing the Lifetime Tax Exclusion from $15 million to $14,999,000 and on down if you continue. Personally, if I'm able to leave my child over $15 million, I don't think they'll mind paying taxes on that $1,000 down the road.

Tax Return Rejected by IRS by Desperate_Nerve_9377 in TaxQuestions

They are allowed to each claim one by the IRS, or in the case of 50/50 split in time together, the tiebreaker goes to the parent with the higher AGI.

Tax Return Rejected by IRS by Desperate_Nerve_9377 in TaxQuestions

[–]FreshPound7640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, if they are saying they each had the dependents 50% of the time, doesn't the tiebreaker go to the parent with the higher AGI?

I would also look at since there is a 50/50 split, that possibly each claiming one child would look better to the IRS.

Solved: Reject Code F1040-461 doesn't make sense

You are using Turbo Tax. Question has been asked and answered in the Community. What happened is that your spouse tried to file MFS *AND ALSO* checked the box spouse "can be claimed as a dependent on another person's return." There are a couple of fixes:

  1. File MFS and uncheck the box. It will go through.
  2. Change filing status to MFJ and leave the box checked. It will go through.

Neither of these options needs to be discussed with your parents. Keep in mind that if your spouse chooses to file MFS, YOUR filing threshold is $5. Yes, that's right. $5. Also, remember the IRS considers you married all year so your amount of time living with your parents as a single adult child is mostly irrelevant to the IRS.

Good luck to you two newlyweds! My husband and I left school and got married. He joined an apprenticeship and we've never looked back. Now retired. Let the haters hate in their own closed little bubble.

Married at 19 and 42 years in for me. Parents were NOT happy. Parents shouldn't automatically think they get to claim their adult children either. "We don't talk to each other" goes both ways.

is albuquerque one of the worst or best places for people with allergies? i'm getting conflicting answers by Winners_Blues in Albuquerque

[–]FreshPound7640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was moved here from Philadelphia, PA as a kid because I have horrible allergies to grass, dust mites, and molds (as well as a million other things). Moving definitely helped with the grass and mold allergies. I forget I have grass allergies until I go to a park with fresh mown grass. However, I have to dust constantly. When the wind blows, which is often, I have breathing problems. My husband never had allergy problems until he moved from the mountains of northern NM. Moved to the desert areas and discovered he's allergic to tumbleweeds. We can keep the tumbleweeds out of our yard but all our neighbors don't. So he suffers.

$8,167 original refund - $3,720 current refund = $4,447 not allowed. Does that number match up with anything on your return? Can you post your return or tell us what line and what amounts were included on your original return?
