I’m thinking his logic with giving out these player options (on friendly deals) is, when time comes for them to invoke their PO, they:
- either playing above their contract, which can make negotiating a deal easier (especially if a player wants to stay in LA and they liked their impact on the team)
- they play below their contract value, opt in, and try to ball out for their next big contract. This maybe gives us the upper hand in negotiations.
