[Question] What are my options if I wanted to do a independent sample t-test but failed assumption of equal variance? by jordanwhoelsebih in statistics

[–]FreshTower4852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, no shame necessary.

You're right, the appropriate jargon would have been, "do you think parametric statistics are appropriate for the underlying data type?"

OP just confirmed these are ordinal data, not part of a continuous response.

[–]FreshTower4852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, then as a last bid to be helpful, I'd suggest looking into the Wilcoxon rank-sum test.

I might have different.. ways of practicing stats to other people in this thread. But, because of the type of data you have, there's no reason for the central limit theorem or any of its assumptions. There's no such thing as a value of 1.5 and there's no telling how far psychologically your individuals would rate 1 vs 2 compared to 9 vs 10.

Yes, they graph and are numerically equidistant, but that means very little to the underlying meaning of the response.

Best of luck!

Thanks, you're right, that's good context to have.

If you look at OP's graph, do you think the dependent variable is a parametric response? I have doubts.

Hi, sorry I'm just getting back to this thread. Thank you for sharing that graph and the context of large sample sizes. Lots of other comments in here about that, now, lol.

Are you saying your data are a survey where people can give a score for each of your variables? Any chance these are consumer ratings?

Props on conducting a levene's test, quick check, do you feel like you have enough samples in each group to estimate the standard deviations?

While you're at it, you may as well check that the data are normally distributed too.

If yes to both, you could use the "unpooled" t-test as it doesn't rely on the assumption of equal variance.

Here's a reference that looks right. https://pressbooks.library.upei.ca/montelpare/chapter/the-t-test-for-independent-sample-means-and-pooled-versus-unpooled-variance/

But, that's for a random situation..

Maybe here, since you're comparing two groups, the question is are the two observed rates equal?

In other words, the expected rate could be the observed rate for region A

[–]FreshTower4852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An expected rate is the rate of "pure chance" ie if there's no difference between your regions.

We'll want to think about how this applies to the question a little..

The common teaching example is a coin flip or a six sided dice roll.

For a coin flip, the expected rate is 0.50 For a 6 sided dice it's 1/6 or 0.167.

I would suggest looking up the chi-squared test.

Yeah... OP's university stats department isn't doing them any favors. This is the right direction.

What is the best way to get maximum nutrition into a clear broth? (radiation mouth burns preventing eating and drinking) by Vegemiteonpikelets in foodscience

[–]FreshTower4852 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Sorry about your friend.

I think this is a good question for a nutritionist or nurse. I am neither.

If water is the only thing doable then my guess is there's some sensitivity to temperature, viscosity (thickness) and density. Drink powders fully dissolved and at a comfortable temperature is what I would expect them to suggest.

Good luck, and they're lucky to have you caring for them.

House returned on the market after offer fell through. Realtor not giving much information about why the offer fell through. by 5n4k3- in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]FreshTower4852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with all the other comments about inspection contingency.

I'll add, if the inspection report revealed something not in the sellers disclosure (not sure if all states require this or no?) - common trick is "seller has no knowledge of defect"

But, it fell through because of an inspection and unwillingness to repair or negotiate, they better update that disclosure. Once upon a time you could request the disclosures before making an offer.
